Laser Eye Surgery

Postby Squinkle » Mon Apr 30, 2012 8:10 am

I am thinking about getting laser eye surgery and was wondering if anyone has any tips/stories/recommendations that they could share? I am at the end of my tether with opticians and would really like to have the surgery but the more I think about it, the more nervous I get...

Thanks very much!

Hi there, laser surgery changed my life! I had a mid level prescription,
-3.75 and -4 respectively, and finally took the plunge after years of glasses/lenses. I went to Optical Express at Bluewater Shopping Centre for the consultations, then had the surgery at their clinic on Harley Street. I was in and out of the clinic in around 1 hour that day, and the actual laser work was 9 seconds on my left, and 13 seconds on my right eye! No pain at all. Ignore any horror stories about burning flesh smells too, that's nonsense and freaked me out beforehand for no reason at all. :) They fixed my vision, my 'halo's' (orbs when looking into light), my astigmatism and improved my night vision. Utterly amazing. The recovery was sunglasses in any form of light for 2 days, sleep in goggles and drops every 4 hours for 1 week. No pain at all. It's now 3 years on and I still say it was the best thing I ever did. I believe it cost around £3000 (it was a gift from my other half at the time). Cannot recommend it highly enough Good luck x

Thanks for posting. I'm interested too. Looked into prepregnancies but was advised to wait till after babies as your eye sight can change....

No problem. Also worth mentioning that when I had it done, I was informed that my eyes will still degenerate due to old age. It cannot fix ageing I'm afraid, but at that time they were working on a new procedure for 'old age eyes' (macular degeneration) which may now exist!

I had mine done with Optical Express. I had my consultation in Kingston then went to their Central London outlet to have the surgery done. I had to wait as was breastfeeding at the time ( think you have to wait 6mths after or something like that). That was 2 yrs ago and its the best thing i've done, no problems at all - i've actually forgotten that i couldn't see before. I was -5 prescription previously so couldn't even see to get out of bed at night!

Me too Twirly - getting so fed up with not being able to see and am at war with Specsavers over contact lens delivery, haha!

Thanks so much for your replies everyone, I really appreciate it and I think I am going to go for it.

Hi all,
I know this is an old post but I was wondering if any of you can recommend a place/clinic where to get laser eye surgery. Really want to go for it! Thanks

Hi,

I had the procedure six years ago with Dr Allamby at the London Focus Clinic. I was/am very happy with the results and pre/post-op care.

They are based in Wimpole Street.

Cheers,

S

I had both eyes done at Accuvision (Parsons Green) a year ago on a recommendation from a friend. Can't recommend them highly enough - the consultation was amazing - they were so thorough and talked through the process to really help me understand it! They will also be totally honest with you about whether it is the right thing for you to do.

The one tip I would give is to (try to!) relax when you actually have the surgery as it will really help with your healing time. I'm usually a bit of a wimp, but I zoned out what was happening, looked at the lights and felt no discomfort whatsoever as a result. And then make sure you have nothing planned for the rest of the day so that you can lie in a dark room with your eyes closed and no distractions (very hard with young kids, but worth roping in some help for the day). I returned for an appointment the very next morning and was told I was pretty much healed up already.

No regrets from doing this whatsoever - I was -4.5 in both eyes with astigmatism and now my vision is perfect.
