Holiday Dilemma - too young to go?

Postby WimParkMum » Tue Nov 20, 2012 3:07 am

Hi
My husband is thinking of doing a winter holiday before the schools break up to the Canary Islands in December and I wondered do any of you have any recommendations? For resorts or location? Also, is it warm enough for sunbathing or too windy?
My main hesitation is that I'd be going with a 8 week old (she'd be 10 weeks in Dec) and a 2 year old, I'm not sure....is she too little?
Nuts I know to be even questioning his idea... I'd normally not even hesitate and jump on that plane!

Many thanks for any advice

We went on holiday when our 3rd child was 9 weeks old to Italy ( for similar reasons it was our last chance to go on holiday out of school holiday dates). It was fine, I was quite relaxed with her being my 3rd (the others were 2 and 4 at the time). A small baby is very portable, especially if you are exclusively breastfeeding. The only bit of kit we took that was indispensible was one of those reclining/bouncy chairs for her to sit in by the pool/room/restaurant ( the buggy was being used by the 2yo) All the locals were so friendly and having such a small baby was a real conversation opener. It was lovely just to spend time with the kids and not have to worry about meals or laundry for 2 weeks. Saying that it was very hot (42C)and she got ill but the local doctor was very competent. The only thing I would say is check what the weather is like where you are going and what are your expectations, the days may be warm there at that time of year but any swimming pools etc will be freezing for your 2 y.o unless they are heated.

Look at the Abama in Tenerife, very child friendly but also a great spot for adults. Can't go wrong imho.

We went to Tenerife last year when our son was 14 weeks old and I couldn't recommend it enough. I'd never been to the Canaries before.

We stayed at the Hotel San Blas, 5* - v.child friendly, I fed my son as we took off & as we landed 4 hours later. He loved flying, slept on my lap & we had people offering to walk up & down the plane with him.

It was lovely to have some Winter sunshine - I wish we were heading off again but we've just moved house.

Enjoy :)

Go for it WimParkMum!

Wish my hubby suggested such an idea!

Better to go now than with a 2 and a half year old and a 6-8 month old who will be more wriggly!

xx

Similar to NYE we took our 9 week old to Tenerife to attend a wedding in October. In short-- do it!! :D

I was a little panicked about the flight but the whole experience was fab. We flew easy jet, got to board after easy boarding but before the masses and as a result managed to get the only spare seat on the plane as clearly no one wanted to sit next to a baby.

I was advised to feed at take off and landing to help my babies ears regulate and it seemed to work as he had no complaints.

only issue that I had was finding enough shade for the baby. The small sun umbrella that comes as a bugaboo attachment didn't cut it.

If you decide to go, good luck and enjoy!
