I need to sell loads - ebay and others, tips welcome please!

Postby supergirl » Sat Jan 05, 2013 8:44 pm

Hi everyone

I wish you all a very happy 2013 full of everything you have wished for!

My number one resolution for 2013 is to make space in my house and de-cluttering!
So i am desperate to sell the zillion babyclothes that i have, all in pristine conditions from Petit Bateau, Cyrillus, Jacadi, BabyGap, Jojo, trotters, Mini Moo, other french brands, Baby Zara, etc.

I have started to put one on Ebay but i m not sure i have done it properly. Tips anyone? Pleeeease! i like the idea of Ebay because you dont guess the price it will go for...

Also does anyone know where i could sell locally (not an NCT sale please it is too difficult to comply by their rules) and quickly? I have so many that taking picts take ages, i know Annabel Arcade is great but i am more looking at getting a table in one of the organised sales really...

And i might get flame for it, but i dont really want to give them to charity...

Anyway, many many thanks for your help! Sx

Instead of selling each piece of clothing individually on eBay you could sell it in bundles. That way you can group some items together and take a photo of the group and sell that way to save you time and effort. I have sold things on eBay and find it very easy but I wouldn't sell clothes individually as I do not have that much spare time!

Hi
I'm just interested in following up on your comment about the rules being too strict to bother selling at a NCT sale. Could you email me direct with what you see as the difficulties as we are always looking for ways to improve our sales.

Personally, I think it is fairly straight forward, you rent a table for £30 and then sell your items, keeping all the proceeds. There are some items (clearly defined in our seller instructions) which we class as large equipment and will sell on your behalf in our large equipment room on a 30% commission basis. There are also a small number of items which we cannot have sold at our sales due to potential safety issues, primarily car seats, cot mattresses, electrical items and breast pumps.

Many people sell over and over again at our sales - i think this is because they are well attended, they are fun and many sellers enjoy talking to the people who will be buying their much loved baby clothes and toys. Clearly it is also financially beneficial too!

Our next sale is Saturday 23 February 9.30-12noon at Broomwood Methodist Church, Kyrle Road, SW11. Please contact nearlynewsales@claphamnct.com for a booking form.

Thanks
Jenny

I found the NCT sales far to restrictive and very expensive (especially if you have a large item or 2 to sell) so I sold most of my stuff at a mum2mum market sale and thought it was great. I didn't make a fortune and could probably have made more through eBay, but it was a great way to get rid of a load of stuff quickly! And what didn't sell was dropped off at Fara on the way home as I was determined not to bring anything back!

I blitzed my baby clothes end of last year (and now have to do the same with toddler stuff) and successfully managed to move a lot on via eBay. I too found it too time consuming to sell items individually also now the postage price of small parcels has gone up considerably people like to buy more in one go I think. I sold stuff in bundles by gender/brand/size e.g. Bundle of 12 items for boy ALL Baby Gap 3-6 months and then listed number of vests, jumpers, socks etc. Plus I drew attention to selling other sizes, brands etc in other listings. If you can use the iPhone app you can take pics as you go and not need to download from a separate camera and it's pretty quick. I'm about to try Annabel's Arcade for some larger items not so well suited for posting as I guess it's a more local marketplace therefore better suited to pick-ups. Although with eBay it's fun selling via an auction you do pay a fairly hefty commission to them and to PayPal if that's how people pay. If you compare the actual costs you may find it's worth doing a tabletop sale instead. A tabletop sale would definitely be quicker overall. Like one of the other responders anything I haven't been able to sell has gone to a friend as hand-me-downs, charity shop I they didn't like it and nursery for spares if it was tatty. The piles of clothing my kids have grown out of seems to grow every time I do the washing!

I agree with previous comments: if you put clothes by age/category and sell them in a bundle format then eBay is your best bet!

Hi yes 30£ for table nct I think is expensive ,I recently declutter my house went to wimbledon stadium market is10£ for table and car space so u can bring as much as u want, the only downsize is people don't really pay much for good items,I made70 £ on the day, woke up hal5,but everything went cheap 1£ 2£ 3£ few nice bags at 5 £,but needed to declutter .
As for charities went to nortthcote rd the other day, goodness gracious they r out of their mind fara so so expensive ex;parka gap 25£,same parka in gap sales25£,are this people for real,I'm surprised if somebody will pay for second hand clothing, same with kids fara....overpriced most things....shame.I used to be poor and brought up my babies buying from charity shops items, buggies, but now I don't think that's possible,it's more like butique charity prizes,I love donate and giving heartily, but they need to get real.
Happy new year yummy mummies,!!!

try mum2mummarket.co.uk.they are very friendly not to expensive and they have massive turn up on they sales.I'm on every single one:) as a buyer:)I hate ebay as sometimes very good pieces go for pennies and it feels like give it up to charity would be better ,no hassle with posting, picking up etc.

I would recommend the Baby & Children's Market (see http://www.babyandchildrensmarket.co.uk/ ) and also the Giant Beanstalk who did a large table sale recently at our Wimbledon branch.

I agree with the others that ebay is a good bet for babies/children's clothes if you sell by bundle. Here are some 'rules' I follow that I find help:
1) set a minimum price of £9.95 for all lots (any less and I find it's not worth the effort)
2) If it's expensive designer clothes that are worth more than £10 I sell separately.
3) keep weight below 750g so 2nd class recorded is £3.15 (people seem willing to pay this for an item that costs at least £10) and this way you don't have to deal with things not arriving
4) sell bigger items I can't easily pack via Gumtree or Ebay (and on the latter for pickup only)
5) sell only on free listing weekends **This weekend is one of them :)
5a) as a trick I will list everything Saturday evening to end in a day (Sunday) and then do a relist for anything that didn't sell Sunday for a week. That way you get two free tries at selling from one free listing weekend.
6) Join an ebay thread to encourage you ie: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/sho ... st58503527

You'd be amazed at how addictive it is once you get started. I've cleared out a ton of stuff over the last year - though it IS a constant battle to keep the clutter under control as we seem to amass new stuff all the time. Ebay's also an excellent way to recycle toys too.

PS: If you are selling on Ebay, keep an eye out for free listing weekends . Atleast you will avoid listing fees even if you have to pay the selling fees and Paypal
