I recently stayed at this gorgeous French manoir set on the edge of a village 20 minutes from the bustling medieval city of Le Mans and had to recommend it as its great for young families OR for a peaceful get away, if you can ever get away without babies and/ or kids! It's about a 4 hour drive from Calais or just over 2 hours from Caen.
It is a beautifully restored 18th century house offering a luxurious retreat, situated in 6 acres of secure, private, child friendly grounds. It also provides you with ample opportunity to eat al fresco, play outdoor games or just sit and unwind. The village has a boulangerie, a shop, a hotel, a tennis court and a Sunday market, for fresh veg, salad, meat, fish, cheese and flowers.
Here is some more information taken from their website;
Le Petit Bois is in the Sarthe department of the Pays de La Loire, just one hour north of the Loire river, its famous chateaux, such as Azay Le Rideau, Villandry, Chambord, Saumur and Amboise, and vineyards. Nearby are lakes and forests, for swimming, sailing, beaches, horse riding, cycling, walking and picnics. Other places of interest near by include Alencon, Laval with its hilltop fortress, the medieval village of Saint Suzanne, picturesque St Cenerie in the Alps Mancelles – the French Cotswolds, Fresney Sur Sarthe, and Solesmes Abbey, famous for its Gregorian chants and hymns. Of course not forgetting the fabulous medieval city of Le Mans, with its old town, where you’ll find wonderful restaurants lining the twisty cobbled streets beside the cathedral. There is also the world famous Le Mans 24 hour race circuit and automobile museum, which are worth a visit.
Le Petit Bois has 3 large ensuite bedrooms each having a double and single bed allowing the flexibility for groups and families to accommodate 6 - 8 adults and children.
The huge lounge has an open fireplace, and such luxuries as flat screen TV, Playstation, DVD player with extensive DVD library, ipod sound dock, internet radio, satellite TV and wifi. In the kitchen there is a large range oven, a dishwasher, a fridge freezer, and a washing machine in the utility room.
Outside is a large back garden with an orchard and summer house, perfect for unwinding into the wee hours, with a BBQ and a bottle of local wine. Provided are such games as giant garden skittles, boules, croquet and badminton. To the front is a private courtyard, where guests can sit and enjoy the privacy that Le Petit Bois offers, and a game or two of petanques!
