weaning - what sort of yoghurt is good for babies?

Postby alexabeazer » Tue Apr 30, 2013 10:38 pm

Hello,
I am just about to start weaning my son (at 6 months) and wondered if anyone has a top tip on a good yoghurt to give to babies? I don't want to give him anything with hidden sugars ideally and I guess some of the small kiddie pots have loads of sugar in them?! Would you just recommend a full fat natural yoghurt for instance?
Any tips gratefully received.
Thanks

I've alway given my two Greek yoghurt, which they will still happily eat at 3. Its also a bit thicker which helps keep it on the spoon. And when they do get their hands on something like a petit filous everyone comments on their great manners as not a drop is spilt!

Rachels and Yeo Valley both do organic kids yoghurts which I used to give my 2 when they were tiny as well as Total Greek Full Fat Yoghurt.

I give my 9 month old Plum yogurts which are naturally sweetened with fruit - he has been eating them since he was 6 months and loves them! :)

If you need or want soy yoghurt, Sojade is lovely and the plain is quite mild, so no need to add fruit.

I've recently discovered Ella's fromage frais in banana and mango flavours - my 6 month old can't get enough of them.

With his older brother, I mixed fruit puree into natural yoghurt.

You can also buy fruit puree mixed with yogurt in little tubs in the non refrigerator aisle where the other baby food is.

Asda is where I buy all of the above but probably other places do the same.

Good luck and enjoy!

Natural whole fat yogurt with mashed fruit/ fruit puree to start out with. I used natural yogurt in lots of things including a mashed potato, rice etc as it gives an extra creaminess plus has lots of natural pro biotics which is great for little tummies.
My boy is a bit older now and I find yogurt and creme fraiche a great alternative to mayonnaise as my son has an egg allergy.

Another vote for Greek yogurt, because it's not too sweet.

Erykah - I was going to suggest this as a friend of mine has one, but you beat me to it! Lakeland has recently opened a big store in Centre Court, Wimbledon and I was hum-ing and haa-ing about whether to buy one or not. In fact the same could be said for practically everything in the shop!! :D
