Help I need to move baby onto bottles!

Postby ekf » Wed May 22, 2013 6:54 am

Can anyone offer some advice on getting my almost 6 month old exclusively breastfed baby onto to bottles. I have to start taking a heap of medication so need to stop breastfeeding. For the last month I have been trying a bottle each day to get her used to it but to no avail. I have also tried a cup with little success. Any tips greatly appreciated as I really can't put it off any longer for health reasons.
Thanks

Hi. We had the same problem recently - a friend pointed out that I was using the wrong teat size (doh!) and we also discovered that baby like it a lot warmer than we thought it should be - once we changed these 2 things, she gulped it down no problem - hope its as simple for you. Good luck!

Thanks. I have gone up to size 2 teats but will try a bigger size and see if that helps.

recommend NUK bottles and try swapping across mid feed, also dont try bottle when they are really hungry.

best of luck, it does work eventually!

Have you started weaning yet? If not, start now!

If you have, then I would definitely recommend just going cold turkey. Obviously your baby would prefer your nice cosy breast to anything so for as long as they think they can get that they will refuse anything else.

If weaned your baby will be getting nutrients from other sources so it shouldn't be a disaster if they go without milk for a day or 2 whilst the battle of wills plays out. But they will give in eventually. I think it took about 3 very stressful days with my daughter.

Good luck!

If you can try someone else feeding her. I had to get my husband to do some feeds as she could smell milk on me or I guess associated me with breastfeeding. Also agree with the other comment about temperature, warming the milk made a big difference.

Hello we have literally cracked this in the last few days with almost 8 month old. He would never take a drop from a bottle before. I gave up trying it with BM and used formula in a TT bottle. But after reading somewhere to do the milk very warm I did that and it has worked. But my husband gives him the bottles. I imagine it would be v tricky to start with you giving them. (used no 2 teats and he's quite a guzzler) good luck.
