New shop on Balham high road

Postby RosieT » Wed May 29, 2013 10:23 pm

Intrigued to discover today that Holland and Barrett are coming to Balham high rroad next to nature intended! Glad to see that the shop won't be sitting empty but was hoping for something a little bit more exciting!

The Fat Deli has closed?

Oh no, I love that place. How sad.

Holland and Barrett is surely going to impact As Nature Intended too.

Worse still Tacuba (Mexican bar on Bedford Hill) has shut down, as has Hop & Spice, the Sri Lankan restaurant! In its place is to be a pizza place - yes, opposite Puzza Express! To be called Franco Manca and the guy who was there when I stuck my head was keen to say ' not like Pizza Express pizzas though!' When I googled them the pizzas sound amazing but they don't seem completely family focused as no desserts or kids menus which sadly these days defines our choice of dining establishment...

Moved to Balham last year. This place has been great every time we have been early evening - http://www.ciullosteria.com/Menu.html. Very child friendly as owners seem very good with the little ones. Pizzas are also very good (although the food in general is very good - seafood pasta especially). Looking forward to trying Franco Manco's though as my sister has been the one in Northcote road and said it was good.

Bit more Balham news - Tacuba is going to be a new cocktail bar and Poulet Rouge is a new venture by Cattle Grid.

If Franco Manca are coming then Balham is blessed. Their place in Brixton Market is an institution with people coming from miles around just to try and usually a queue.

Their service is quite infamous too but that's part of the charm and hey it's a proper pizza joint so everything goes...including children. If their Balham venture is as cool, slightly chaotic, well staffed and tasty as Brixton's, you and your children are in for a treat...no need for kids meals and desserts in a real pizzeria :D

The pizzas at Franco Manca on Northcote Road are amazing! Proper pizza, you will never want to go back :)

I'm with Camillle, Balham is blessed!

I'm in mourning over Tacuba. I noticed today. They were my favorite Mexican in London!

Does anyone know the details behind the Fat Deli's closing, or is it the common story of higher rents and lower traffic? We loved it, though I guess we should have gone even more than we did. Thanks

Hi
I LOVED the Fat Deli as well.

I feel it was really tied in to having my children as we met mums before/after school there, had class nights out etc etc

I emailed Lee to say goodbye and he said that he had an offer and it just moved very very quickly.

He is planning to open somewhere more centrally soon, I'll keep you posted if I find out!

Another vote for Franco Manca. Great food and fast turnaround so that keeps my family happy. I also love that they seem to attract all different customers (families, dates, etc.) so it feels like a real community place.
