Second hand or used push chair - yay or nay?

Postby StreathamOne » Wed Sep 18, 2013 10:20 pm

Hi all

This is my first post and I'd be grateful for your guidance.

Expecting first child in January. I am extremely practical given the advice from my sisters (based in Dublin) not to spend money on lots of things I don't need and in particular don't spend unnecessarily on an extravagant all sibging all dancing pushchair that will be replaced by a cheaper model that I am likely to buy when going on Hols. From experience my sister realise that the inexpensive lightweight model she bought to take on holiday was used more than her expensive ''designer" model she originally purchased once she got home.

This might ring a bell with some people.

I have money to spend and I am considering buying new but have seen a lot of 2nd generation buggies complete with accessories for sale on message boards and I am attending the nct nearly new sales coming up. To this end, I was wondering what the general view from other mums was on second hand buggies. Some friends have said they wouldn't be keen unless you know who they came from but others have said it seems like a good and sensible idea provided I get a really good condition buggy.

All thoughts welcome

Sorry pressed the wrong button as I was saying you'll find some fab great condition used bits for your baby why waste lots of money?? Yes it's your first and I'm sure you want everything new but items people sell are sometimes either unused or barely used so you'll save yourself lots of money! The NCT sales are great too & I'm sure you'll agree once you've been to it.
All the best with your pregnancy! Hope this is of some help to you.

Congratulations

I'd say yay!

I'm a mum of 3 now and we used the same pushchair for all 3. It was perfectly good for numbers 2 and 3 and they didn't suffer having a 'second hand' buggy!

Also be mindful that if you intend to have any more children you might need something that you can add a buggy board or something to for a toddler (age gap dependent of course!) or even replace it with a double buggy so you might be selling a nearly new buggy in a year or two!

The only thing i wouldnt buy second hand is a car seat. If you re happy with the quality snd sturdiness of the second hand buggy go for it. Who cares whether it is designer, first or second hand? If it works for you that the only thing that matters.

I second your sisters tho, my second child couldnt stand the state if the art icandy peach blossom we got when she was born and that costed an arm  but loooved the mclaren xt we already have for travels and nursery. But I personnally loved the bugaboo cameleon i had for my first child (no double at the time). So see how you feel but it is also ok to indulge a bit when it is your first i think.

Good luck and yes there are so many things you dont need, be careful. X

Is £250 for a 2nd generation bugaboo chameleon too much?

I bought everything new for my first baby, and quickly learned the error of my ways! I'm sure that many with agree that you do tend to end up with at least 2 buggies (I have one friend with 6!!!) for different purposes, ie the one that can be used as a pram for the first 6 months, the one that can easily fold up to go in the boot or on the bus, vs the one that is built like a tank and can carry your weekly shop.

As long as the buggy looks to be in good condition, you can give it a good clean (some you can simply take the covers off to wash), and away you go.

Save the extra money for a treat for yourself once the baby is born, even if that treat is a designer nappy bag! Good luck!

Hi
I feel as long as it is in good condition and is worth the money
Go ahead. I brought a second hand bugaboo bee and it was in great condition
And I brought my 2nd generation (limited edition) chameleon brand new which I will be selling soon with all the trimmings, all in boxes!
It has to be right for you!

I'd say you'll be lucky to get a 2nd hand 2nd generation bugaboo chameleon for £250. They usually go for £300+ on ebay. You often see them advertised on this site however, go into the buy/sell section.
I'd also use the facebook group SW18 Mums buying/selling/giving section, you get a lot on there and it's reasonable.

Would also reiterate don't get a 2nd hand car seat, you never know if they have been in an accident. I got one (maxicosi cabrio fix) in Halfords over the summer for about £85 on sale.
Also don't ever use 2nd hand mattresses, even between siblings/cousins etc.

Nothing wrong with buying second hand, but I would recommend you view before you buy.

Fara Kids on Chatham Road always has several prams for sale, and they do check them thoroughly -- and if there are any problems you can go back to the shop.

I don't think there is anything wrong with buying either way. Buying used means that you miss out on the warranty (I have a bugaboo and did use it) but it also means you will have all the accessories. I would never buy a used car seat - you never know if there have been safety recalls or if the seat was involved in an accident. Hope you find what you are looking for either way!

How exciting, congratulations!

If you are planning more than one child be cautious of buying second hand, you need things to last!

I've just sold a bugaboo 2, in good condition but and full working order, used for my 3 children, (along with a second hand Phil and ted double and MacLaren light weight) for £155 on eBay, it felt like a fair price, be careful not to over pay. One brilliant thing about bugaboo is their service department and the ease of buying replacement parts and fitting them.

I loved my bugaboo and thought it worth every penny.

Have fun shopping
