I grew up in the middle of the countryside in a very rural county, where Landrovers, Range Rovers etc were used for driving through fields, along muddy tracks etc - ie what they were designed for - and the ones that came to collect my friends from school were always covered in mud, dog hair etc! As a result I do find it odd to see pristine ones driving around in London. However, having said that, I would probably fall under your "blonde driving a 4x4" remit as we do have a large car - the reasons are 1) if you have 3 children aged 4 and under there are not that many cars where you can fit 3 suitable car seats in a row in the back and 2) it scores very highly on safety performance which is reassuring when you do lots of long motorway journeys. For what it's worth I don't use it for the school run or much at all during the week as we are lucky enough to be able to walk most places we need to go BUT if I did then that would be my choice! It is a free country, people work hard for their cash and if they choose to buy an expensive shiny car as a status symbol or anything else for that matter then it is up to them!! Just to play devils advocate, if you find yourself in a stand off where one of you has to reverse down a narrow street, I don't think it really matters what car you are driving - round here the streets are so narrow with parked cars either side etc that even if you were both in a Toyota Prius, Smart car or whatever else you deem acceptable, it's not as if you would be able to squeeze past each other - you would still have to reverse!!!! If the papers were full of "child hit by Range Rover near school gates" stories then I would be inclined to agree people should be discouraged from driving them, but I'm not sure if that is the case. I'm afraid I'm quite "live and let live" about this kind if thing. People who drive inconsiderately, uninsured or deliberately ignore your right of way are another matter of course...
