What is the cost for a childminder Post Reply

Hi all,

Was wondering if someone can perhaps let me know what the daily cost for a childminder is. Doing 8am- 5pm and my boy is 2years old. Found a childminder that I really like and she said her cost is £70 per day. Just want to find out if that's the going rate?

That is a good price quoted. As many childminders can ask more e.g. £8 to £10 per hour.

There are definitely cheaper childminders around and I think £70 a day is at the top end but not unreasonable if they are experienced, provide good food, nice house/garden etc. I pay £65 a day.

I think that is quite reasonable. My friend in SW12 charges £80 per day (however she can take them 8am-7pm) but I think regardless, she charges £80 for the day.

There's no real going rate for a Childminder as we are self employed and decide our own rates, it's down to the parent to accept or decline. Taking in to account we pay our own taxes, Insurance, wear and tear of home, higher gas and electricity costs, food (if included), toys and resources which turns out quite expensive. Also in dearer areas the high costs of living (rent/morgtage) whilst making a margin of profit. The extra time and effort taken in to filling paperwork/assessments to demonstrate we are correctly following the EYFS structure can also be taken in to consideration as can experience.

When I went on the childminding course I was told that for our area the norm was between £8-£10, and the further out of London you go the less you pay it seems so location has a lot to do with it.

Sometimes you can get a cheaper childminder but added costs like meals and outings are added so they end up more or less the same as the more expensive ones who add it all in one lump.

Just one more thing but not sure whether it will have an effect on the cost. My son will attend nursery in term times from 9-12:30. The childminder will drop and collect him. Do you think I can ask for a reduced rate during term times or will that be unreasonable?

Hello

As childminders are allocated a certain number of children, your son will occupy a one of her place''s that she will likely be unable to fill while he's at nursery, also she will be taking him there and dropping him off, and likely to be the emergency contact if he needs to be collected, so he will still be occupying a full time place.

That's how it normally works...but speak to her if you have any doubts about it..

Yes I think is it pretty standard to pay the full day in this situation. As Lindy above says your child will be taking up one of the childminders spaces and they will need to maintain their income. Some childminders probably do offer more ad hoc/part time options but I don't think this is the norm from my experience.
