restaurant recommendations

Postby jg75 » Mon Jan 20, 2014 5:04 pm

I'm looking to book a restaurant for my hubbys 40th (just me and him). I'm looking at a weekday, can anyone recommend anywhere in Battersea, Northcote Road area, Tooting, Balham or Earlsfield that would be nice to go to (quite romantic and intimate but not too empty on a weeknight)? In terms of cuisine we are pretty open to anything really.

Thanks in advance!

Chez Bruce for uber posh foody grub. Snails and foie gras and a cheese board that goes for a run every morning. About £100 a head or more dependent on wine.

Brinkleys for a smart restaurant, English/French brasserie. £120 for two with a lot of house wine and really nice food. Deep friend cambert and steak and chips or liver and mash are faves :-)

Bens Canteen for a more informal and cheaper and younger but still lovely night out, similar to Brinkleys for food

Harrisons: bit like Brinkleys and gorgeous food

Tooting has gone quite foodie in recent years. Tota is lovey and Chicken Shop is by the guy who owns Soho House. Haven't been to it though and it does have the best curries in UK

Northcote Road: avoid. It's full of restaurants that are over-rated except Rosita and the Sherry and their sister restautant Lola Roja

There is also a new Chinese dumpling place on the Pavement in Clapham, heard good things but never been.

If I was being taken out I'd want to do Brinkley's first then Rosita and the sherry

Hope this helps.

:-)

I am hungry now!

sorry I meant to write Tooting has best curries in UK, not chicken shop!

Wow this is great thanks so much. Have been to Chez Bruce and Brinkleys but wanted to try something different. The Tooting places look ace actually, might try those out with the family too.

Has anyone been to the Argentinian place in Battersea, I think it's called Santa Maria del Sur? That has always taken my fancy but have never been. Would be interested to hear feedback...

Yes, Rosita and the Sherry, or I really recommend The Dairy in Clapham Old Town - http://www.the-dairy.co.uk/

Trinity in Clapham old town. Think it may have 1 star now or at least was shortlisted. Fantastic food and busy mid week, formal but definitely not stuffy. It's a great alternative to chez Bruce.

another vote for Trinity. Great food and service and ideal for a treat. I really like The Dairy too, very busy and buzzing every night of the week.

For a great meal, you cannot go wrong at Lamberts in Balham. Especially if you go midweek, you will not find a better valued menu. It is always my top choice.

I went a few months ago to the Argentine restaurant on Queenstown Rd. It was good if you are hungry for a steak but I wouldn't hurry to go back for a special occasion.

Rosita is good if you like 'posh' modern tapas. It is very crowded as its so popular.

I also really enjoy on Osteria Antica Bologna on Northcote Rd but probably not for a special occasion.

have fun!

Husband took me to Rosita and the sherry bar for our wedding anniversary, it was lovely. Bill came to about £100 for both of us (which included a decent bottle of plonk) so not too bad. I especially enjoyed the sherry 'tasters'!

We're going back there for hubby's birthday in March! Looking forward to it already!

Lola Rojo is undergoing a refurb, not sure when it opens again, but I do like that restaurant too.

Hello Jg.

I recently moved to Balham and I'm still not familiar with the area. However I recently found this local site http://balham.com/listing/category/eating-and-drinking/ which is full of all kinds of local businesses. The page I have provided is about restaurants in Balham. I myself am planning to try one of these some time soon.

Hope that helps, take care.

Chez Bruce has gone downhill lots, no idea how they retain a star.

Trinity is wonderful, amazing food and nice atmosphere.

Another to try is The Dairy in Clapham, probably some of the best food that you will have in the area and where all of the local chefs frequent.

http://the-dairy.co.uk

Lamberts in Balham is also a great place.
