Nanny pay adjustment due to new one

Postby supermoomoo » Tue Jan 21, 2014 5:46 pm

hi there

just wanted some advice from you all out there. What is the standard practice on nanny pay if one is expecting a new addition to the family - given that prior to taking on the role, she was already briefed that the family is expecting to expand to have at least 1 more ( currently sole charge of just a 3 yr old girl - live out).

Do we have to adjust her pay rate upwards automatically (for e.g. at contract renewal) upon the arrival of the baby ( or at some point - for e.g. if some help is rendered in the begining weeks) ; and if so, by how much is the expected norm?
or;
it is ok to stay firm at the rate already negotiated earlier in the year?

anyone had similiar experiences?

I would expect the rate to remain the same until any annual review

Thanks goldhawk for your reply.

if this is a relatively new nanny , and the annual review will be her first reivew... is this still reasonable to accept a pay rise? given that I think she has a very fair competitive rate (for Wandsworth!) already?

Hi I've been a Nanny in the area for a very long time. If I had been with you for less than a year then I would not expect a pay rise when I started taking care of an extra charge, especially if I knew that this would be the case when I accepted the job. I would expect to have an annual review each year and have my salary assessed at this point. Most years my employers have given me a pay increase in line with inflation or a small cash bonus. It doesn't need to be a lot, but it makes you feel really appreciated when you get a small pay increase and makes you want to go the extra mile for the family in return.

Nannies work on a per family basis and not per child, so it is not standard to increase a nanny's wage when a new baby is born. Just in the same way as when your eldest goes to school you wouldn't cut her salary. She took the job knowing a new baby was on the horizon and so this is not unexpected, unless you have already promised her a pay rise.

I would recommend however, acknowledging her help, and when annual review time comes around then perhaps giving her a raise in line with inflation or whatever you see fit.

This is why a nanny works out as a wonderful and affordable childcare option when you have more than one child.
