American fridge freezer brand/model recommendation

Postby CourtneyQ » Sun Feb 09, 2014 10:23 am

My husband and I are building a new kitchen and are therefore in the market for a new American style fridge freezer.

Can anyone shed light on what are the most helpful/important features? What should we be on the lookout for, what should we be wary of, etc?

Any advice is most welcome.

We got a Fisher and Paykel a few years ago and I LOVE it. Ok, it is a bit odd to love a refrigerator but it's laid out really well and keeps things properly cold. It doesn't have lots of fiddly shelves and drawers and so, I think, holds more. I grew up in the U.S. and never had a side-by-side. I'm not a big fan, though F&P do both "American" style and what I consider normal (freezer below, fridge above). JL have them; no doubt other places do too.

We have just gone for a Samsung for one of our clients - nice split on storage, pretty good on energy efficiency and also looks great.

It depends on your budget and what finish you are looking for too.

Sorry to butt in, but here's with a related question maybe someone can shed some light on please?
We too are redoing kitchen we've seen quite a few kitchen designs with cabinets actually built around impressive American style fridge freezers e.g.tall pullout larder to side but extra storage cabinet above.

My question is are all American fridges pretty much the same size? ( the way say most oven widths are)
Else would strike me as quite a daft thing to pay for expensive cabinetry around a free-standing appliance that may need replaced much sooner that cabinets...or am I missing something?

hi, if you are tempted to, don't buy a miele, buy a liebherr, as miele refrigeration and freezer units are made by leibherr industrial, you are just paying four or five hundred pounds more for a miele badge, samsung,f+p, are decent machines, if moneys no object sub zero.

We have always had Liebherr (side-by-side) refridgerator/freezers and love the quality! All glass internal and easy removable shelving that makes cleaning easy. We had a small issue with our first one and the customer service was very efficient and immediate. Good luck!

We have a samsung with water and icemaker - although we remove the icemaker in winter to give more freezer space. Been really pleased with it.

According to our kitchen designer, the majority are the same width (about 90cm give or take a few cm) although the height can differ by around 5cm or so. Therefore, kitchen fitters just use fillers to make sure the cabinets fit around the fridge freezer.

We have a Liebherr side by side - it is brilliant.
