Kensington Wing at C&W - Consultant you recommend? Post Reply

Hi there,
I am almost 9 weeks pregnant of my first child (So happy!) and as I heve got a good private insurance, I am thinking about giving birth to Kensington Wing, the private unit of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Could someone recommend a good consultant she had a birth expecience with?

Lots of my friends had severe tears and I would be happy to get an episiotomy if possible.

I'd make sure your private insurance does cover it - most don't.

I went to see Keith Duncan. He was good, although not the most extrovert person.

A friend of mine went to see Mark Johnson and was happy. Although apparently she though he was too 'by the book'. He lives BTC too.

Come to think of it, I prefer Keith Duncan as he does all his own scans which made me feel safe. He's also got a super gentle touch.

I had Gubby Ayida for my 1st, and Zoe Penn for my 2nd.

Zoe Penn was AMAZING. But unfortunately I think she has now retired from private practice? But if she hasn't-go for her, she was quite simply fantastic. I would recommend her to anyone.

Gubby was fine. My DH was very impressed with her, but she lacked (for me) the personal touch, which doesn't matter to some people, but mattered to me.

Personally I only wanted a woman consultant, so my options were limited. I have heard good things about Makrina Savvidou and Roshi Patel, as well as Keith Duncan.

There is a new consultant there now called Charlotte Deans who sounds fantastic.

DKV is the name of my insurance but it costs approx 2,000 pounds/year to be 100% covered. Maternity cover needs a delay of 10 months.
The best is to ask an insurance broker to propose you different options relating to what you want to be covered as a priority. Find one who will make his money not on you but on the insurance contract you will sign. Better because free for you

I was under the care of Zoe Penn but had to transfer to Mark Johnson about 10 days before I was due. I was far more impressed with Mark Johnson.

Hi - I was under Mina (Makrina) Savvidou at Chelwest - but under the NHS (she does both) because I am a "complicated" case. She was very good and I would recommend her - although she never actually attended the birth.

That's because when I went into (full on) labour, the NHS bit of Chelwest was full and the midwife-in-charge didn't call me back with an alternative! So my poor hubby was googling labour ward numbers at 1 a.m. and finally got us accepted at St. Mary's Paddington. I ended up having an emergency ambulance transfer from Battersea to St. Mary's. Not fun.

Anyway, I'm also 9 weeks pregnant with my second and have booked back into Chelwest (NHS - my PH doesn't cover maternity) on the basis that it surely can't happen twice .... can it ?

At least with Kensington Wing, whatever consultant you choose, there'll be a bed reserved with your name on it!

I had Nick Wales and my husband and I thought he was great. Keith Duncan did our scans and he always made us feel like he was in a rush and we shouldn't be wasting his time. He had no bedside manner. Nick made both me and my husband feel very comfortable. He is a bit of a rugger bugger, but I preferred that rather than an overly clinical approach.

With regards to insurance, mine was paid for by Cigna and is similar to the other one mentioned in this chain.

I also had Ms Savvidou and I highly recommend her. She errs on the side of caution which I like so I had about 6 scans it was great!
For one of my appointments she was away I saw Shane Duffy and he was very good too.

This is exactly what I was looking for - I'm nearly 8 weeks pregnant with twins. I've spent the last 3 years swotting up on all things fertility related and now it looks like we might have a viable pregnancy, I don't know where to start. The only thing I know is that I'll probably be classed as a complicated pregnancy due to age, history and twins.

Elenita - when you say booked in, what do you mean? Do you have to book in for your due date?

I can't speak highly enough of nick wales. I have had two planned c sections with him (first daughter breech) I felt very relaxed knowing I was in such experienced hands and had two wonderful birth experiences. I don't regret a penny of the expense.

Roshni Patel paid me a visit on my last day in hospital and I thought she was great. She also has three children of her own, so gave me some good advice on feeding, routines etc.

Generally I think each obstetrician only takes on so many patients at one time hence important to 'book in' with your chosen ob as early as possible.
