Top ten places to eat?

Postby Annabel (admin) » Fri May 09, 2014 10:17 pm

Hi Everyone
I want to pull together a list of the top ten "secret" places to eat in Nappy Valley.

It can be Tooting, Earlsfield, Clapham, Balham, Battersea, Putney...I really don't mind but the food has to be good. :D

Really good.

The (informal) rules...

Has to be independent, no chains! :D
Low(ish) profile so far or even new. E.g Chez Bruce wouldn't be on the list, not because they're not amazing, they are, but everyone KNOWS they are amazing.

My ideas so far...but these are only ideas and I want yours!

Meze in Tooting
Mama Lan on Clapham Pavement
Thai Grocer in Earlsfield
Gastronhome in Balham
Mirch Masala in Tooting
Meat and Shake Tooting
Bens Canteen St Johns Hill
Hudsons Putney

Would love your thoughts!

Roxy steak cafe in Earlsfield? As good as gaucho

Hate to say it but Bens Canteen is opening where willy gun used to be so technically it is a chain and you've broken your own rule ! ;-)

There's also a Meza in Tooting Broadway (as well as Tooting Bec).. If there are only two does it count as a chain though? I love that place.

Cah Chi in Earlsfield is pretty good too, although, again, I think they have a sister restaurant somewhere else.

hahahaha

Ok, so what I should have written was no national cookie-cutter chains :-)

Cafe Nero: no (although I love their coffee!)

Ben's Canteen: yes (if you all agree with me!).

Thanks guys!

L'Antipasto on Battersea Park Road. Not sure it's a hidden gem, as such, because it's pretty busy, but it has really reliable food, with a great specials board I suspect is actually made up from whatever they have got fresh that day and which has never been the same twice that I've been there, and it is half price four days out of seven. It's not super child friendly, but it's not anti kids either. Every now and again we try somewhere else, but then we always go back here again.

Love The Dairy on Clapham Pavement exceptional seasonal food done incredibly well - the tasting menu is exceptional value. Chicken shop in tooting is another great place although there is another in kentish town although still independently owned. Honest in brixton has the best burger in London and they use ginger pig meat! Poulet rogue in balham is good but if you wanted chicken I would go to chicken shop instead. Look forward to seeing other suggestions :)

And I can now, officially, announce the name of this thread has changed to *sound of trumpets*...

The Top Twenty Secret Not-Chains(ish) Secret(ish) Places to Eat in Wandsworth, Tooting, Clapham, Battersea, Putney, Earlsfield and surround areas.

It's catchy and straight to the point.

I wonder if the URL is available.

Any more ideas?

Chez Vous - family run Lebanese restaurant in Tooting (and BYO)... food just as good as Meza but more relaxed for dining as the table is yours for the whole evening! No website but you can find them on Facebook
