I'm a member of the Friends of Tooting Common, although I'm posting this in a personal capacity, and not representing them. (We're going to email our members later this week re the plans).
Further details of the proposal are here, explaining what the Council are looking for in a bidder:
http://ww3.wandsworth.gov.uk/moderngov/ ... ix%201.pdf.
It's worth noting that this proposal is much smaller in scale than the Goals-style football pitch development mooted in 2007-8. However, some of the grassland is included in the disposal as the new pitch will be approximately 25pc bigger than the existing Redgra pitch. A particular concern that has been raised is whether the trees next to the pitch will be cut down. There is a map attached, which is also displayed at the site.
The Committee keeping a close eye on what happens, in particular the visual impact of any development (eg fences, floodlight pylons, light spillage), damage to the commons during construction, and the impact on bats & other wildlife.
However, the Council have consistently said that they do not have funds to refurbish the building and the Redgra pitch, so people must weigh up the impact on the common against the social benefit that should accrue from a new sports facility if it's available to the community.
The disposal notice (link here:
http://ww3.wandsworth.gov.uk/moderngov/ ... ix%202.pdf) indicates that this will be by a long lease, rather than a sale. The Council committee paper is here:

Any works on the common require approval under common land legislation, and the council are in the process of applying for this. The Planning Inspectorate notice is here:
