Pauls to Biscuiteers, Fat Face to Flight Centre?

Postby jonathan @ hamptons » Thu Oct 23, 2014 3:10 pm

Afternoon all,

Just walked past Pauls and seen that it's to become Biscuiteers...

I don't understand why we can't get a workers salary lunchtime snack shop - anyone know someone high up at Pret?!!? We can't all afford to eat at Gails every day and whilst we all love the Breadstall it would be nice to have an alternative.

I was also speaking to workmen in Fat Face the other day and apparently it's going to be Flight Centre. Absolutely no idea how that's going to work...

Well you know the answer to question 1 if anyone does! Rents and rates. You want cheaper food then St. John's Road has it...............if you want it?!?!

Question 2, Flight Centre, really? I'm gobsmacked at that. I cannot possibly see that lasting longer than a piece of Ratner's jewellery (only oldie's will get that  )

Biscuiteers from what I gather are a pretty rough copy of our lovely, local The Biscuit Tree. Gorgeous iced biscuits to give as gifts...or scoff yourself of course!!

Flight Centre?? Wha??

Are we becoming a neighbourhood of fat kn@ckers then? How many biscuit, bun and cake shops does one street need?

I know, I was astonished when the builder told me, and at first I thought he was joking but we then had a 10 minute conversation about them and travel agents in general. Of course it could all be a ruse to throw people off the scent but if he was bull**itting then he was very good at it!!

I'm pretty sure there is already a flight centre just a 2 minute walk away on St. John's Road? (Although I'm wondering if I'm dreaming given no one else has mentioned it so far!?) Would be pretty odd for them to put another one so close by so unless they are relocating perhaps it is a ruse! It's been there for quite some time though so suggests a business like that can "last" around here (although I appreciate it's not technically on northcote road at the moment)

@mummywalker yes you're right. so unless business is booming something doesn't add up. a shop fit is an expensive move.

Well I may be in the minority but I think Biscuiteer sounds great. Why on earth would we want another cafe? There are loads of places already on Northcote Road - and lots of them are independent shops (unlike Pret!). I'm surprised you would like a Pret Jonathan, I thought you would want an independent shop - how about going to Al Gusto or Dandelion or Northcote Patisserie or Brew or Tamra? The more chains that move into Northcote Rd, the more the rents rise, the more independents won't survive. Northcote Rd was always seen as a foodie road and now there are two (if Biscuiteer is opening) new up market food shops people are moaning. Flight Centre though is a very bizarre decision though!

I would have thought that fancy 'gift' biscuits are something you buy on key occasions: Christmas, Easter, Valentine's etc..but not rest of time.

I can't see there's enough repeat/regular custom to sustain a business. But I guess they must have done their research.

In all honesty I'd love an indie sandwich shop but the reality is that as you say, they can't afford the rents. Although I by no means want to have more multiples, we have to be realistic as to who can afford to be here. We all go to Al Gusto, Dandelion & the like but sometimes we just want to grab a simple sandwich for a few quid. I guess the perfect solution would be a pick your own deli counter / sandwich shop like a Spianata or a Salumaria Dino but again I guess rents are an issue. Hey ho, never mind. Still can't get my head around Flight Centre though!!!!

Hi Everyone,

We're very excited about opening our second Biscuiteers Boutique in Northcote Road and hope to be open next month, fingers crossed!

In case you don't know us, we started online in 2007, selling collections of hand-iced biscuits and published our book, the Biscuiteers book of iced biscuits in 2010. We had so many requests from people wanting to learn to ice that we opened our Notting Hill shop and now we're opening in Battersea. It will be part icing school, part shop and part cafe so you can drop in, grab a coffee and ice some biscuits if you fancy - a bit like a pottery cafe!

We absolutely love Northcote Road and all the other independent shops and cafes nearby. We've become such a part of the local community in Notting Hill and we really hope to do the same here so do drop in and say hi!

x the Biscuiteers

Biscuiteers will NEVER rival the wonderful The Biscuit Tree set up by a local Mum. The biscuits are far nicer, far more reasonable and great to support a local business.
