Hi Everyone,

I have been developing a baby product for the last two years and it's the first week I'm sharing my idea with the public. My product, MediTip is still at the development stage, therefore I would love to hear your feedback...Do you like it? Would you buy it? How much would you buy it for?...And any other comments.

Well done you - I think this is excellent. As a mother of two children both of whom did not like to take medicine I think its very interesting.

I think its more interesting when you have to give more that one dose, ie, over xmas he had to take antibiotics and calpol. He just gets tired of it.. and started to spit out. May be worth considering that as a positive too with this product.

Would I buy it? probably - and up to £5

I've had a look at your video (it's not totally clear to me as I cannot see the product in action) but from what I can work out it seems like an amazing idea.

I could have used it when I gave birth and needed something for colostrum when I struggled.

Spilly Spoons http://www.spillyspoon.com has done really well so this should too.

How does it work with your pitch? Is it the final ten that pitch to a group of people? What are you hoping to gain? Investment?

Thank you for your reply! One of the mums at the focus group gave me a similar feedback, she said she wished she had it to use with her premature baby to feed him milk.
This is only the first stage of the competition, top 50 votes go to the next round . The competition actually finished on Tue but because they had technical issues, they are reopening voting for 3 days between the 18th and 20th of May. Yes, I am looking for an investment so I can bring MedTip to market.
PS. I do realise that the video is lacking the presentation of how you actually use MediTip in baby’s mouth but I had limited resources. Once I have my final prototype in place, I will surely correct this! Thanks for a useful comment. The idea is that you naturally place it against baby’s mouth (same way as you would the dummy) and the syringe is automatically directed towards the cheek area. It doesn’t matter if you use your right or left hand, either way, it will be directed to the cheek area.

Sorry, but i don't really understand why a child would agree to be fed medicine with this if they are not happy taking it in a syringe? Surely there is just as much scope for them to get distressed by you putting this device in their mouth?

A view of the product in use would probably be helpful.

Thanks for explaining the way the product works to me Dora - I now understand fully and it's a great idea.

SW11 - syringes are not made to safely administer into the mouth of babies. The plunge can be too sharp and fast causing a baby to choke. There have been many cases of babies being admitted to A&E due to this issue.
Sadly, not all parents know the risks of using an incorrect syringe for a baby.

There is only one size that should be used and that also has a very slow plunge - these are used in hospitals and cannot really be purchased in the high street.

Hopefully you will now understand.

Thanks for your feedback! MediTip is not meant to entice babies to take medicine (if it does, great, it would just be a bonus ). The purpose of MediTip is to make it safer and easier for a parent/carer to administer medicine to a baby, especially in a case when a baby is reluctant to take it. As opposed to a dosing syringe, MediTip is soft, therefore it protects baby's mouth and gums when you are trying to place it in their mouth (while a baby is wriggling and moving head away). Once placed in the mouth, MediTip helps to keep the syringe in one position, automatically aiming at the cheek area (safest and recommended way of dispensing medication). I hope it makes it more clear.

PS. Some mums at the focus group did say that the product would make the syringe look less scary but as I said, it would just be a bonus.

Oh I see. To be honest it hadn't ovcu to me to use a syringe for a baby - have never needed to. My issue is getting my 2 year old to take medicine which is a complete nightmare. I thought this was intended to help with this issue but I must have got the wrong end of the stick. Thanks for clarifying.

No problem, glad it's more clear now. You might want to have a look at Eva the elephant. I found the dropper slightly messy but it might work for you and I think you can now get a version with the syringe. It's designed for bigger kids.

I can't believe that as and estate agent I'm commenting on this(!!), but I am a father of two girls, one of whom had her fair share of lurching through one illness after another when she was younger.

This looks like an interesting idea, however it looks like you still have to fit the syringe into the dummy replica and 'shoot' the medicine into your baby's mouth. Just a thought, but as babies seem to be quite happy suckling on a dummy at an early age, is there not an option to somehow fill the teat of a dummy with medicine and then remove the syringe so that the baby can then suckle as usual whilst at the same time taking in the medicine?

Just to quickly clarify, MediTip is not a dummy replica. It's simply a syringe 'tip' with a clever design

Yes, you still have to use a syringe but this is the whole idea. You use a dosing syringe supplied with the medication (it also ensures the correct dosage is given), then quickly slide MediTip on to make administering safer and easier. When giving medicine to a baby, you should always try and dispense medication slowly (as you probably know anyway). Like you said though, it does happen that you 'shoot' it too fast if the baby is wriggling. With MediTip, it helps you be more in control as the syringe is positioned in one place once in baby's mouth but also, if it does happen that you 'shoot' it too fast, it ensures that it will not go straight down baby's throat and cause choking.

PS. There are actually medicine dispensing dummies out on the market, which I have to say, saved my life with my baby, but it still wasn't the right soultion for me. My son did not take a dummy or a bottle, therefore the suckling was not an option for us. I had to use a little plunger to make the medicine come out. I did find it very messy, as I had to fill the syringe up first, then squirt it into the little container on the dummy (which only holds 5ml), it was also hard to open...just a very long and messy process when you have a crying and unhappy baby in your arms. It was also very difficult to press it slowly so on several occasions medication did 'shoot' way too fast down his throat.
