garden office/summer house

Postby sparkletiger » Tue Jun 30, 2015 6:09 pm

We are planning to put a garden office/summer house in our garden and so I thought I'd see if anyone on here has any good recommendations of suppliers. We're looking for something that is functional but also looks amazingly cool. Erring on the contemporary style.

Has anyone got one they love? Any points to consider that may not be obvious?

TIA

We couldn't find what we wanted off the shelf, so our architect drew up a design and a builder built it.

I say design, it's just a rectangular box. Internally, one room with an ensuite shower/loo.
Externally, white render, with bi-fold doors.

If you're wanting it as a home office, put heating in. We economised, as it had a lot of insulation, and now regret it. We have to use a plug-in radiator over the winter.

i created my own posh shed in our back garden, with damp proof membrane, ventilated floor, insulated walls and clad in cedar.
Being a 'hands on architect' i built it myself, but bought some french doors on line which simply dropped in to the frame.
Of course depending on how large you want to go - you should check any planning issues (we had to get retrospective planning for a client that built a garden summer house a little too high last year). You also need to be mindful of Building Regulations - even party walls could kick in if you are building close to boundaries - depending on how 'cool' a design you want etc.
We could help you with the design, offer suitable cool ideas and suppliers of doors/bifolds/green roofs whatever you aspire for. it would be something we would love to help with. www.atelierdb.com - we are a small office in SW18 and we provide private homeowners with some cool affordable design solutions.
I do know a local contractor who has undertaken these types of garden buildings, but usually only as part of a larger contract.

We bought ours through a company called Dunster House and built it ourselves (they charge approx £1,000 to build it). I think it cost approx £3,000. They have lots of different styles and sizes. We have recently had our walls clad in insulating plasterboard and redecorated and it looks really smart.

My husband runs http://www.yourgardenroom.co.uk, is based in SW18, and specialises in this. Anyone interested can visit past clients and talk to them, and see the garden rooms in use. Price depends on size, planning restrictions, etc and they take anywhere between 4-8 weeks to complete.

Hi Sparkle,

Great post. For a combined architectural, interior design and building team, Pristine Finish are worth considering (07872 338 775, http://pristinefinish.co.uk/ ). Good luck and let us know how it goes x

Hi there
We user a company called the garden office . It is bespoke and fitted in 1.5 days. I use it as my workroom and I love it. It is modern with triple glazed windows. I highly recommend them
The bonus is the no maintenance as it is cladding in cedar compared to the cheaper versions which need to be painted and maintained every 3 years.
A fantastic buy.....

I recently had a summer house in the style of a Beach House built in the garden, my 3 year old daughter is absolutely thrilled with it. (It was intended to be a 'Posh Shed' to house a fridge/freezer and condenser) ...... But had to look cute as have bi-folds stretching across the back of the house.

Anyway .....Fantastic small company based in Norfolk. All buildings are bespoke - to get an idea Google: Appletree Bespoke Timber Buildings or go directly to their web site: www.appletreebespoke.co.uk

Very friendly, excellent workmanship, carpentry at its finest!
