Cavapoo

Postby calliwally » Mon Aug 24, 2015 6:17 pm

After much consideration and research we have decided to get a cavapoo (cavalier/poodle cross). Does anyone locally have one and where did you buy it from? After deciding on the breed the next big minefield is finding the right breeder and avoiding puppy farms.

Hi,
We have one. She is almost a year old and we got her from a wonderful breeder in Kent.
I oils be happy to give you the details so you could ask when she is next having a litter.
But, our little one is not quite what we thought she would be. Wr wanted a small dog, good with children, who didn't shed, and needed a good hour walk a day as well as regular play with our children and be a companion to me.
She is very very boisterous, and extremely active. A 4 hour bike ride yesterday didn't ware he out. She wants to run around all day (more than regular puppy play.) I am literally out with her all day. Despite several trainers, classes she is also very naughty- won't ever come when you call her etc... She also has snapped at children and is very skittish of a lot of things- teddy bears, cars, bikes and will yap at them constantly until they, or she is removed from the situation. She is also very attached to me- I can't go to the loo without her barking the place down.
I have been raised with dogs, have owned several breeds etc... I am not a novice dog owner. But feel we may have made a mistake with this breed.
We have come across several and the temperaments vary so much.
It's your deduction but wanted to give you our honest experience not put you off.

Thank you, I appreciate the honest feedback. I hadn't imagined that they would need quite that much exercise and that's why we thought about a cavapoo rather than a cockerpoo. We had also initially thought of getting a cavalier because of their calm nature and the way they are with children (my husband had several growing up), until we came across the cavapoo and fell in love with them! I'll have to do my research into breeders and the temperaments of their previous litters. Much like you I'll be the one at home with the dog but I will need to leave it with a dog sitter on occasions when I need to for work reasons. Thanks very much x

Hi,

I have never responded to a post before but felt compelled to write. We have a Cockerpoo 14 months old and a (nearly!) new daughter aged 9 months. I knew that I wanted a dog when we fell pregnant for all sorts of reasons but I researched and researched and decided the cockerpoo was the most suitable for us. I too looked at the Cavapoo as well as other pure and cross breeds but I am so pleased we chose him- I can assure you he is absolutely amazing! We trekked to Lincolnshire twice to choose and then collect him and since day one he has been brilliant. Before maternity leave we enrolled him at Bruce's Doggy Day care where he goes 2 days a week and on the other days he only really needs one decent walk. He never barks, is amazing with the baby and whilst totally loyal, does not go bananas when the postman comes! He is brilliant with other dogs, doesn't shed and doesn't smell.. when we meet children on our walks, he just sits down and lets them touch him, poke him etc and just gives it back in kind! He is ace! Do please get in touch if you would like the breeder info or anything. Good luck with your search.

Hi, we have a cavapoo and a cavapoochon. I did a great deal of research before getting them. You really need to look at the mother and father (size and temperament). We are so happy with ours. Small so can be picked up and not nearly as energetic as a cockerpoo. Perfect with children and incredibly loving. I think if you are planning to leave it alone at all I would recommend getting two as they suffer greatly with separation anxiety. Anyway best of luck but really look into the breeder and make sure you see both father and mother. I sadly can't offer you my breeder as she has now stopped breeding. All the best sophie x

Have you thought about a cavachon? Don't have one so I don't know about their temperaments but they're unbearably cute! (I realise that isn't the best way to choose a dog  )
