FREE 6 week rollerblading course, 530pm Sundays in SW11

Postby London_fire » Wed Sep 16, 2015 2:07 pm

Dear Parent

We're a skating club based in London and in association with the GLA and  Coca-Cola Zero ParkLives we're running a free kids rollerblading course right here in SW11.

FAQs

- Did you say Free

Yes. We have limited rental equipment so only those that have or decide to buy their own can join at present.

- Who are you guys?

I'm Andreas and I am coordinating the course. My team follow the UK Inline Skating Association syllabus called "Earn Your Stripes". I'm a qualifed UKISA instructor and examiner, I have an enhanced DBS check (Aug 2015) and also captain the London Fire Rollersoccer team. We are the current UK and Ireland champions. Rollersoccer will feature in the course but we will focus on improving EVERY skaters skill level.

- What if my child is a beginner.

Not a problem. We can teach kids from zero to rollerblading hero

Has the course already started?

- Yes but we're looking for more kids to join the course. If they can bring their own rollerblades and protective gear (wrist, knee, elbow pads as well as a skate or bike helmet) we have spaces available on a first come first served basis. If they need to rent there is a waiting list. Note we require pre-registration and there is NO registration on the day.

- Can i pay to join the course

These session are free and we take no payment for them. After the 6 weeks we are looking at the possibility to run paid sessions at the same time/venue.

- How do i join?

See below

Quick guidelines to joining this course.

A. Open to boys and girls, 5 to 12 years old, all levels, who haven't taken a skating lesson in 2015.

Sessions take place 5:30pm till 7:30pm for SIX consecutive Sundays, 20 Sept to 25 October.

Venue is the Latchmere Leisure Centre, MAP: http://tinyurl.com/London-Fire-Skating-Course

Please register before coming if you wish to skate as we DO NOT ACCEPT people on the day

B. A two hour session in the park will also take place on a Saturday near the end of the course, date is TBC and will be confirmed in the next few weeks. Attendance to the park session is optional. Format is learning focused the first hour and more tasks/games the second hour. Please bring loose comfortable clothing and drinks/snacks as we take plenty of breaks. You are not required to stay the entire two hours but may do so if you wish. There is a cafe in the sports centre and there is free parking for 2.5 hours at the venue.

C. Your child(ren) are required to attend ALL 6 SUNDAY SESSIONS . If the time slot is not suitable - this may be too late for those travelling long distance - please do not join as this may prevent others from joining. This six session target has been set by GLA and Coca Cola Zero Parklives, our sponsors, and if we miss this target this may prevent future funding opportunities. If you are not sure if you can attend the minimum number of sessions this course might be better suited to kids that can. From experience our sessions are LOVED by children as we find something for everyone to enjoy. Here are some photos from the first session last week:

D. Inactive children or those with a disability are also welcome. If you are unsure about any of these requirements please get in touch either via this forum or on the email email.

E. Myself and other members of the London Fire Rollersoccer team are providing our time free of charge. You can aid us by helping your and other children put on gear; by bringing water, cut fruit, power bars etc for the staff. You can also liking our facebook page here:

How to register

Send the following to andreas@rollersoccer.co.uk

1. Name of child

2. Date of birth

3. UK shoe size required / i have my own skates and protective gear*

4. Name of parent guardian

5. Contact tel of parent or guardian

6. Your post code

7. How you originally heard about this course, please be specific.

8. I accept there will be photography and filming at sessions (required)

9. I have read the guidelines for attendance (A to E above) and agree to them; particularly minimum attendance.

10. My child has a disability or is inactive. Please give further information.

11. I am/am not interested in future skate training opportunities.

* note we have a waiting list for skate rentals, and a much shorter list for those with their own equipment. Courses like this normally cost £150+ per child so buying equipment for around £80 is a great investment. As the venue is covered these sessions are guaranteed.

Once I receive the above info I will reply with a confirmation. Your child's space on this course is not confirmed until you receive this confirmation.

Thanks

Andreas

Hi,
We have been to the session last Sunday and the kids totally enjoyed it, even my five years old son, it was a first time for him!

Thanks to Andreas and his team for giving their free time :-)

Thanks for your support sobermond.

We should have three, possibly four instructors on hand this week which will enable us to split groups according to skill level.

Course availability is good for those with their own equipment. If you're thinking of buying there are two shops I recommend in London;

-London Skate Centre, 27 Leinster Terrace, Bayswater, London W2 3ET

-Slick Willies, 12 Gloucester Rd, London SW7 4RB

Both open on a saturday.

In terms of skates we recommend these:
http://www.slickwillies.co.uk/inline-sk ... sizes.html
These pink ones are the 'girls version', the boys ones have an orange trim. I think the only difference is trim colour tbh.

A huge benefit is these are adjustable. E.g. junior 10 shoe size will be adjustable to an adult 1.

Improving rollerblading technique will also make ice-skating and skiing easier.

Hope to see more kids sign up soon!

We went last week too and this was absolutely BRILLIANT!

Skating is such a fab activity for young kids.

It's brilliant physical exercise.

They can do it anywhere in a city.

It's great for making them robust (if a child can get comfortable falling down and still get up and skate again they're set for life!)

Every school should have their own skate club. (In fact we will be petitioning our primary school to do exactly that!)

We've been trying to find a club like this for years. And we have tried lots of instructors.

But none of them come close to our experience of Andreas and his team last week for professionalism and enthusiasm.

It's worth pointing out too that one of the boys there - aged 11 - who only started skating 3 years ago is now on the England skating football squad! What other sport could get you so close to international level so quickly?

My kids were totally blown away by this lad.

We are loving the course and won't miss a session.

It's amazing and perplexing to me that this is free - but we will be extremely happy to be paying in the future too.

From,
A dad + 8yr old boy + 6 yr old girl

Thank you Omnibus. A few parents brought drinks and snacks for our volunteer instructors which was greatly appreciated.

Here's a video from last nights session. We're growing and we hope to get even more kids joining.

We've once again some rentals available as some kids were absent. We may be able to accommodate kids who can only attend 3 weeks of our remaining sessions so send us an email if you know of any keen junior rollers!

For those interested there is an 8 week course starting on 1st November 2015 at the Latchmere Leisure Centre. Children aged 5 to 12 years old welcome as are sporty 4 year olds (you know the type; use a scooter everywhere, jump off things)

Note these paid sessions include the UK Inline Skating Association (UKISA) Earn Your Stripes booklet which rewards children with stickers for each skating skill mastered. We aim to spend around half our lesson time on techniques and the rest on games such as rollersoccer, roller hockey and slalom skating. As well as the benefits of practicing these hybrid sports skating boosts ice skating, skiing and water skiing technique.

Further details can be found on the Zebra Skate website:

http://www.zebraskate.co.uk/lessons/battersea/

£120 for an 8 week course excluding equipment (£15 per session)
Each additional sibling at discounted rate of £80 per course

There is a class limit of twenty and once we reach this limit we will not be accepting any more skaters.

To join this course there is no standard of skating ability required so those new to skating lessons are welcome as are 'movers and improvers'. Full payment is required to complete registration and Earn Your Stripes booklets will be handed out on receipt of payment; thus skaters already taking lessons with us can begin mastering moves and collecting stickers before course start date.

Please forward on!
