TAX QUESTION regarding Gift Aid

Postby kah » Sun Nov 08, 2015 10:09 pm

Hi, I'm wondering whether anyone can help me with a question about Gift Aid.

My child goes to a small pre-school which is run as a charity. The pre-school is considering registering for Gift Aid however it is unclear whether they can benefit from it when the donations are from parents as www.gov.uk has the paragraph:

"If parents or relatives are asked to make payments of 'voluntary contributions' to a school or school charity, which are linked to the provision of services or facilities to related pupils, they are not charitable donations."

However later on it says:

"Donations given for non-uniform days, sponsored events, building appeals and equipment appeals will usually qualify for gift aid."

The pre-school do not ask for any contributions, they simply want to make people aware that this is a charity and that people can make contributions. They are approached by parents who ask to do this. In addition they do one sponsored event each year. Could Gift Aid be claimed in either of these situations given that the money will be coming from a parent?

Many thanks in advance.
