Any nice gluten free cakes around?

Postby Louisejersey » Tue Feb 02, 2016 6:51 pm

My Mum is visiting us this weekend and has just been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease therefore has to cut all gluten from her diet. She is particularly upset about not being able to eat cakes! I wondered if anyone could recommend somewhere I could get some delicious GF cakes in the SW11 area?

I tried manna dew on Battersea High Street at the weekend, a new gluten free bakery and the tart I had was delicious, I would highly recommend. Not sure if they have a website but they have an FB page. Also sometimes there are stalls selling gluten free cake at the lavender hill farmers market, although I haven't been for a while.

Whole Foods on Lavender Hill are more than likely to stock gluten free cakes.

I believe Urban Gourmet on St John's Hill does GF cakes and I think Planet Organic at Southside does as well.

I have coeliac disease, and find nothing beats homemade cakes, I use Doves gluten free self raising flour, and any gluten free baking powder. (In all the supermarkets)

Some of the shop/cafe/market stalls one are too dry, gluten free bakes are at their absolute best on the day, they don't keep well at all, even the next day they have lost that soft light fluffiness. I also find they make them over complicated, I just want a really good Victoria Sponge cake, lemon drizzle, chocolate cake or coffee cake. Too often it's too much ground almond this or polenta that. And they are expensive.

I have been cooking now for years just replacing the ordinary flour with gluten free (self raising) but always add baking powder as well. The cakes need a bit more liquid, either another egg or a little bit of milk, they can take quite a lot of extra beating as well. They don't rise quite as much, but still taste as good. It is a bit trial and error, but you get to eat lots of it while trying! Still can't find a good GF puff pastry to buy, my yorkshire puddings look a bit sad but taste just as yummy.

So for a Victoria Sponge I would do 150g GF SR flour, 150g golden caster, 150g butter/margarine, 3 eggs, teaspoon vanilla essence.

Good cakes to buy though if you don't have time and need a quick easy source are the M&S Free From or Wheat free range, and also the Tesco Free From, both taste pretty fresh. Deelight Bakery in Ritherdon Road SW17 also has a good selection of other GF baked stuff like brownies and tray bakes and so on.

I feel for your mum, it's hard when you are first diagnosed and getting used to the change of diet, the Coeliac Society is worth joining as very supportive and they send you lots of free samples. Good luck and happy cake eating.

FLH03 - Thank you so much for your wonderful detailed response, how lovely to receive recipes! My Mum is actually a fantastic baker, so I imagine she will take your suggestions on board.

Tinkles - I have checked Manna Dew out and it looks lovely. We will definitely give there a try.

Grateful for all the responses, thank you!

Rosey at Edible Creations makes an amazing egg and gluten-free chocolate and salted caramel cake. She is an artist with sugar paste as well if any of you are looking for a jaw-on-the-floor cake for a wedding or celebration.

Hi,

I realise I am about a year too late for this posting, but for future reference if you are still interested (or for the next time your mum comes to visit), I have recently started up my own home baking business specialising in gluten-free cakes. I am based in Balham but can deliver anywhere in London.

Please view my Facebook page for some samples of my work - apologies, it is pretty rudimentary at the minute but I will be adding new photos as I go. If you have any specific requests, please do get in contact with me as chances are I can certainly do it!
