Can you grow a potato from a potato??

Postby KatherineHepburn » Tue Mar 22, 2016 1:19 pm

Are any of you budding veg growers? Can you answer a question from my 6 year old?

Can we bury a potato that has sprouted in the cupboard and then grow new potatoes??? It is a standard Maris Piper :D

We've grown celery from the base and spring onions too but never attempted a potato but it looks as though the neglected bag in the cupboard is having a right go even without our assistance!

If anyone can advise that would be fab.

Yes, you can. My Granny used to do exactly that. She never bought potatoes, all came from her allotment. For some reason she used to plant the smaller ones, now that I think about it, possibly because she would have used the bigger ones for cooking. Happy planting.

you can of course grow one from the other, but the need for growing from "seed" potatoes comes from the certainty of disease/blight avoidence.

My gran also only grew pots from other pots...

I don't know of the likelyhood of causing a problem, but unless you are on or near an allotment I think the risk would be small.
