Can anyone recommend an effective book on potty training?

Postby TootsNewMum » Mon Jul 25, 2016 10:16 am

We are starting to think about and plan for potty training so would be very grateful to receive advice from NappyValleyNetters about recommended reading for potty training please!

I wasted money on books / stickers... and learned that it works best when the child is ready. From both personal experience and what friends have said, the later the better, especially with boys. Summer is a great opportunity to go pant / nappy free and just keep a potty nearby. Lots of praise when 'toilet' in potty is successful but not rewards (when do you stop!) and "never mind, let's try again next time" if any accidents. No pressure. We went straight from nappies to pants and I had a handbag full of spare pants- I avoided going back to nappies. I hope this helps- all children are different so whatever it says in books may work for one but not all.

I agree - can't recommend a book as there is no one size fits all approach that works. Some kids hate being wet and others don't care. Some respond to reward charts some don't. Some prefer potties others the loo. Some kids get it very quickly others it takes weeks.

I would agree with don't start too early though - with today's nappies there is no real hurry and it's a lot easier once they are older and understand more.

I had the gina ford potty training book but as with all her books it gives the impression that if you just follow her rules it will all be easy... not necessarily true!

I agree with the other responses, there is no book that can teach you about potty training. Your child will tell you when they are ready and again the later the better. There are plenty of signs to let you know when they are ready (just google for a list). Personally, I didn't use a potty as I don't see the point as you then have to train them to sit on a loo seat. I just went straight from nappies to the loo. I bought cloth pants (Bambino mio) to catch any accidents, it doesn't stop them from feeling wet but at least it doesn't run down their legs! You have to be prepared to be housebound for about a week so that there is no stress on either your child or yourself. My first daughter was 2 years and 4 months and she was so obviously ready so we were done both days and nights in a week. My second I tried when she was 2 years and 10 months (it was summer and I thought it was the perfect opportunity) but was clearly not ready so after a couple of days I left it and tried again when she was 3 years and 1 month (December!) and we were done in a few days. The key is to not get stressed, be prepared to sit with them and read stories and sing for a long time and lots and lots of praise! I bought stickers that said "I used the toilet" and they were in different colours. Red for a wee and yellow for a number 2! She was desperate for a yellow one so that helped! Whatever you choose to do, good luck with it! It seems a big deal and feels like forever when you are doing it but then looking back it is such a short time!

I agree that you shouldn't rush in to it but found the Pirate Pete and Princess Polly books good with my two. Also Liam Does a Poo in the Toilet for my daughter as she refused to poo in the potty for a while even when she was dry
