Signed, thank you for setting this up. Sadly, I fear that it won't do any good but we can live in hope!

I was at a meeting hosted by Clapham Common Management Advisory Committee. This was about maintenance of sports facilities on the common including toilets. What was evident that there is/maybe some money from sports bodies like Sport England for projects like renovating the changing rooms and red shale pitches but Lambeth Council themselves have their budget cut further this year.

I'm afraid that it's the modern day public services dilemma, everyone wants better services but no one wants/can to pay more for it. I think a little imagination is required these days in getting local businesses/stakeholders involved in terms of sponsorship etc. Nothing is off the table ideas wise these days even in Lambeth, where previously corporate sponsorship would have been shunned.

The percentage of council tax payable that goes uncollected is twice as high in Lambeth as it is in Wandsworth.

Maybe Lambeth should ensure that those who should be paying council tax pay it rather than constantly whine that it's not getting enough money from central government.

Also, maybe Lambeth should stop giving council tax reductions on ridiculous grounds. For example, Lambeth currently gives a council tax reduction "if someone in your household is currently, or was, in prison". What a joke.

My God there is enough money around Clapham Common (i.e. residents) to give £10-£20 or more per household towards the construction of new playgrounds or improve old ones. We would have playgrounds with golden equipment!

I have tried to campaign for better playground before with Friends of Clapham Common and all the groups in particular. I really hope you get somewhere! I reached a dead end.

Good luck and let me know if I can help (pm me)!

Signed. First world problems and all, but I agree. In comparison to Dulwich park for example, the playgrounds on Clapham Common and Wandsworth common are pretty rubbish.
Thank you for setting it up.

If this has fallen on deaf ears previously.....how about approaching the event organisers to budget an amount into their proposals?
Also in Oz, locals often pull together to fund raise and then build fantastic play areas...
Just a thought, I for one would be happy to get involved.

Signed.

Worth noting that many of the playgrounds in wandsworth have had lottery funding.

It is normal for play spaces to have voluntary funding above and beyond local authority provision. I am not sure what Lambeth's approach is but I would suggest you write to your local councillors to find out more. I would imagine they would be responsive on this sort of matter.

The recent upgrades in Battersea Park (Wandsworth) have been funded partly by increased commercial partnerships (e.g. Putt inthe Park and Go Ape).

Wandsworth has come in for a lot of flack for those arrangements, but they have undoubtedly led to some significant improvements to the existing facilities.

Great idea to start a petition. I contacted Lambeth the other week to ask about improved facilities. I think the Alfriston Rd playground in particular could be better. The ground surface is a mess, really uneven with lots of raised edges. I didn't get a very positive response from them, so like mumbojumbo had wondered about fundraising. Would crowd funding be an option?
