Finding a charity to support

Postby monaco » Tue Mar 21, 2017 10:11 am

Hi, we would like to start dedicating more time and resources to a local charity but I'm not sure where to start.

We have discussed that as a family we'd like to help other women or girls so looking for organisations that focus on that. Ideally something local and where support can be given at the weekend given that we both work full time and our daughter is at school.

Does anyone know of any local charities that fit the bill or would be able to advise me where I can start my search?

Many thanks

Hi Monaco, I work for a small charity based in Surrey, offering refuge accommodation for 13 women and their children who have fled domestic abuse, for up to six months. For risk management purposes they have all fled at least 20 miles (some come from the local/London area). We also have a small team who support 150+ women living in the community.

Obtaining funding for these services is challenging. Most of the women arrive in refuge with almost nothing, usually having found a small window of opportunity to safely flee their perpetrator. Just £7 buys a basic fresh food welcome pack of bread, milk, butter, cheese, tea bags etc.

I realise this doesn’t exactly answer your query in terms of volunteering time at weekends so is just a suggestion and may not be at all what you are looking for. However if this sounds the sort of thing you might like to help fundraise/provide resources for, we would be very grateful. Thank you.

Those are not charities Chucka.

You really spend your time picketing abortion clinics?

@jen66 I was indeed shocked when I saw that and chose not to point it out here but totally agree that these are definitely NOT the kind of organisations that we would look to support.

Really liked the sugestion of Goldstart and if we were living closer, would have jumped at the idea to help dencng57's one.
