NCT Courses

Postby n.harker » Fri Jun 16, 2017 2:55 pm

Hi Ladies

First time mum here and new to London. Thinking about doing a antenatal course with NCT.

Does anyone recommended this course and was it helpful?

Thanks

Definitely! Didn't end up going with any of the guidance but made 5 lifelong pals!

Definitely. I have a 3 month old and have been meeting up with my nct mum's 2-3 times a week, it's been a great support. The content of the class is useful your not ground-breaking, it's more the support network you pay for really

Agree, the NCT course is well worth doing to make connections with other mums in the same boat as you. It was invaluable for those months after birth and 4 years later our connections are still going strong. It's fantastic to watch all our little ones grow up. Definitely do it.

Everyone says the same thing: take what they tell you with a grain of salt (they have a certain slant to the advice they give), but it is worth it for the mum friends you make. I thought about doing it until I looked at the prices. They break it down by hour on their website and this looks affordable but when I looked at signing up for one of their signature courses and added up all the hours together, it cost almost £400 (unless you qualify for waivers or subsidies).

I didn't do the course. Instead I used this website called Mush to meet local mums in the area: https://www.letsmush.com/. As for the baby advice, just read your baby books and watch Youtube for demonstrations of baby first aid etc. Youtube can answer all your questions, basically. That's what I found, anyway. Your local hospital has free antenatal courses as well.

However, that being said, if you have no baby experience or are nervous about the whole process, then maybe spend the money and do NCT.

The Bump Class - owned and run by the lovely Marina Fogle (Ben Fogle's wife). You'll get a cross section of highly qualified experts teaching various parts of the course and will leave with a really useful list of contacts for once you get home - including postnatal support options, breast feeding expert Geraldine Miskin, Lucy Lewis (an osteopath who also teaches the Fulham classes) and great advice on what you need to buy. Open minded (so not preachy or judgey about breast feeding, covering bottle/formula as well as breast feeding) and also happy to discuss options if you prefer to have an elective C-section or talk about having pain relief during labour which many NCT attendees have told me was not given any air time at all.

Good luck for a swift and safe delivery. :D
