Hi everyone

Walking down Bellevue Road, past Wandsworth common this morning, I was appalled at what had been left by those people who were ‘enjoying’ themselves yesterday afternoon in the sunshine.

If you were one of those people on the common and left some/all of this litter you are an absolute disgrace.

Even the guys who borrowed the deckchairs from the Althorp (and their “take out” drinks) have left a lot of litter and bottles on the grass, you know who you are.

Children play on the common all year long and broken glass is inevitable from these selfish people.

When will the council fine people for this litter, it must costing the council tax payer a fortune to clear up after them all summer.

Yes this drives me mad too but I fear it's one of those problems that unless a person like you or me who cares or council staff are there when it happens to tell them off then a minority of ignorant selfish idiots will do it. I think that mess in your photographs has been cleaned up but driving past about an hour ago there are a few new "circles" where people have evidently enjoyed their food and drinks and left the packaging behind. Do you think there is any chance we could get the Sainsburys local to clean it up since that's where most of the stuff is purchased from.

It’s not just the fact that children play on the common!! This disrespectful behaviour affects everyone irrespective of age, broken glass or not!

And the same goes to the people having a BBQ yesterday, Sunday afternoon, in the middle of the currently beautiful, immaculately cared-for green opposite Bellevue Road, smoking out everyone else in the entire area who was trying to enjoy the sunshine. Litter is a horrible eyesore but, at least, it can be removed immediately, but the black burned patches from disposable BBQs on the grass cannot!

I once asked a man in his 50s i think to pick up a blue plastic he had just thrown on the ground 1m away from a public bin to be told “no i pay my taxes do it if it snnoys you so much”.

I think for some people it is a complete disregard of the fact that we all share a public space that we all use and or enjoy so it is not their problem.
Agree with someone who said they were not raised to do it.

Also I agree that it may be cultural. I mean i come from s country where you dont get completely hammered at 3pm any day of the week rain or shine.

Some years ago while campaigning to get a dog poo bin and a rubbish bin on the open space opposite my house, I got a response from WBC that the policy was to encourage people to take their rubbish home with them. Since the bins have been installed (after about 10 years of campaigning) the situation is much better.

However, I do still pick up litter every now and again and have certainly picked up litter along a footpath near me where there is no bin.

I agree it is anti social to leave litter, but when one person leaves litter it encourages others to do so. Perhaps if you see people having drinks or a picnic you could tactfully offer them a rubbish bag?

That policy is the same as Lambeth's as to why they didn't install bins on the tennis courts in their Borough. Complete nonsense of course, just leaves a few people to pick the rubbish left behind by lazy people

Thank you for posting and drawing attention to this constant aggravation, eyesore and environment pollution. . . .!
I live opposite Wandsworth Common, so have first hand view and experience of this recurring disgraceful behaviour.....
My garden gets littered, on a daily basis, with “left-overs” from the Common, blown in, but also carrier bags with litter actually dumped between my plants and in the bushes.
So those get carried from the Common (commendable) across the main road, but then dumped at my place...... Grrrrrr
WHY, when those culprits are very capable in carrying and bring with them bags of food and drink, are they not “able to” simply take the (now much lighter in weight) bags bag home and dispose of the litter content according to category, in recycling and/or rubbish containers?!?!?!?!?!
I find this totally incomprehensible & disgusting and have to conclude that ultra lazy, totally uncaring, selfishness must be the cause.
Shame on those responsible; you are the cause and contributors to plastic pollution of our country sides, the rivers & other waterways and the oceans of our planet.
Therefore detrimentally affecting wildlife, water supplies and the food chain, which affect all of us, including yourselves and your families!!!
Educate yourself, change your behaviour!
It is not difficult to do.

I was left a “nice gift”, a week ago.
Someone had walked into my front garden, round the side of my house and dumped a dog poo bag (including content) in my domestic refuse bin.

Isn't it obvious, if they don't install bins they don't have to employ someone to empty the bins, and thus this reduces the council tax. You get what you vote for.

Could we campaign?

I think the idea of a ‘summer tax’ could work... all those offering take out food (within a specified radius of the common) to pay a percentage increase in council take throughout the months of April-September? This would pay for dedicated teams to keep our commons clean!! - without taking valuable resource from elsewhere. They could even invest in banner style refuse notices to indicate where the bins are (as people clearly don’t have eyes for themselves).

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned on here... RATS!! We are warned against feeding the ducks, do these individuals wish to live alongside rodents? It really is vile.

Fine sentiment aimed at Wandsworth Council with the council elections coming up...

...but Labour's Lambeth-administered Clapham Common is much worse yet their rates are substanstially higher...

I agree there seems to be a policy of removing waste bins by stealth. There used to be one at the top of Broomwood road near the G1 bus stop (Clapham common end)
It was removed when they dug up the common for electrical works last year and was never replaced.

That piece of common is now liberally littered with exercise gel/sweet wrappers, plastic bags/bottles, tissues etc and definitely far worse since the bin has gone. (Not sure if it’s Wandsworth or Lambeth to blame for that one!) Seems like a false economy to me.
