Antenatal Care SW11? Really need advice for first timer

Postby gbell84 » Thu May 05, 2011 11:03 pm

Hi
Just moved to off Northcote rd and have discovered I am 6 weeks pregnant. Really need advice on where to register with a local GP as have seen some terrible reviews on local practices and dont have anyone to ask where is the best.

Any advise would be massively appreciated

Tks

If you can get into the Thurleigh Rd practice it has a good rep

I'm with Battersea Rise Group Practice (on Battersea Rise near Strada and Le Bouchon) and am very happy with them. I am also pregnant. Also heard Thurleigh Road are good but I am out of their catchment area.

You might also want to think about which hospital you want to give birth in (assuming you are going to have a hospital birth) as your GP will ask when you go to see them.

Good luck!

Thurleigh Road is very good. All doctors are really nice and competent. They do have a catchment area though.

Some of their doctors also do private care: you register with them for 40£ a month, I think and you can then get access to them at any time. It might be that you can get access to that even if you are not in their catchment area.

HI Kat

Thanks for the recommendation to try Battersea as I looked in Thurleigh but not in their catchment area. Could you tell me who your doctor is?

Many thanks

Once you have a doctor and need to pick a hospital, I really had a great experience at chelsea & westminster. I can particularly strongly recommend the antenatal classes they run. I did them as well as my NCt course and was much, much more impressed with c & w's free one.

But one step at a time, find a doc first! Just thought it was worth a mention. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about anything to do with pregnancy/childbirth, whether it's about services in this area or anything at all. It's such a crazy time that you don't want to feel lost and bewildered!

I am registered with Dr Williams. But when I go, I just get an appointment with whoever is free next. There is quite a complicated system for being seen quickly (as opposed to routine appointments booked in advance) but I have found that with my little boy, they have always managed to get me an appointment for him (even when I was just being a neurotic first time mother).

Good luck with everything!

Go to Battersea Rise Group Practice on Battersea Rise. Dr Bass is absolutely lovely - I cannot recommend her highly enough. I had all my antenatal appointments with her and she is lovely with babies. Dr Harris and Dr Williams are also very nice. Avoid Dr Langdon like the plague unless you want to have an appointment with a very miserable and rude woman.

I just want to second what a few people have said and recommend Battersea Rise GP practice. Dr Bass and Dr Williams are without a doubt the 2 friendliest and loveliest doctors I have ever gone too.

The nurse who does the baby vaccinations is also lovely and makes my baby smile and giggle which definitely helps.

How funny what you said about Dr Langdon in the last post - I have had a couple of bad experiences with her too - once when I was pregnant she actually made me cry :(. I am sure she knows her profession but her manner is appalling.

I would echo the other comments about the Battersea Rise Medical Group. I am pregnant with my second child and now hold out for appointments with Dr Bass & Dr Williams, as they are very approachable & friendly in comparison with other doctors at the practice.

I have just joined this surgery after becoming quite disillusioned with another local one. I have got my first appointment in a few weeks with Dr Knight - does anyone know this doctor? Thanks in advance.

Thank you all for your recommendations - so great to get these. I registered this morning with Battersea Rise Group and am already impressed. Sharon who works front of desk was extremely nice and welcoming and even though i am not registered until Monday I told her i just gotten a yeast infection. She got me to give a urine sample to test so i dont have to wait until next week before i can get a prescription.

Thanks again for the advice.
