Looking for a place to stop en route to Cornwall

Postby nightmonkey » Wed Aug 29, 2018 11:41 am

Hello, we are going to Cornwall in a couple of weeks' time and will be staying near Bodmin in North Cornwall (at Glynn Barton). I have three children under 4 and we will need to drive during the day, so not looking forward to the journey. We are looking for somewhere toddler friendly to stop and run around for a couple of hours around the middle of our journey. Can be a kiddy friendly pub with activities or an outing. Any ideas welcome. Will probably take the M5. Thanks!

I can be a bit of a National Trust fanatic but they are amazing for kids and this place was a brilliant stop:

I agree with the other poster: leave early (5am say) and make a breakfast stop at 8am. When you’re done, there’s only ~2hrs left.

We usually get up early and then stop en route for breakfast too. But lots of other people usually have the same time at peak holiday times! Hopefully you'd be ok in a few weeks time.
On the way home from Cornwall, suggest Lydiard Park just off the M4 at Swindon. A country park with a great playground, country house, picnic area, cafe and even a Go Ape type activity for older kids (though you may need to book).
A slower/longer route home is via the A35 from Honiton along the south coast. If the weather's nice, there are various places along the coast to stop for food and fresh air, such as West Bay.

We tend to stop at Montacute House (National Trust) for a run around and a play on the swings. It's lovely and they have ice-cream!
Barrington Court is another option.
Enjoy.

We stop at The Masons Arms
41 Lower Odcombe, Odcombe, Yeovil BA22 8TX

Nice pub with a great garden as well as a large field they use as a campsite at the back. Plenty of space for running around to break up the journey.
