Dear NappyValleyNetter,

“What did you eat last night?”

On Saturday we were at a very large “milestone” fancy dress birthday party and Mr NVN, who has been on a bit of a health kick recently, had enjoyed the refreshments to their fullest extent.

We’d weaved back home at about 1am and I’d last seen my husband shortly afterwards, opening and closing cupboard doors looking for something to eat.

I hadn’t heard him pedal off to get a kebab, which was good news both from a road safety perspective and because he was wearing a bright green, skin tight, sheer “morph” suit. This had attracted admiring glances all evening, not for his physique but for his confidence to wear something that would have been inadvisable even if he were twenty years younger and five stone lighter. Goodness knows what the Balham Kebab Company would have thought; but it still didn’t solve the mystery of what he’d eaten.

“Ham sandwich,” he replied, “it was lovely,”

“We don’t have any ham,” I said.

“Well we did until I ate it,” he waved towards the fridge, “massive piece, it was lovely.

The hospitality has obviously affected his ability to use descriptive words other than lovely.

Then the penny dropped.

“Ahhh that’ll be the gammon we were going to have for Sunday dinner,” I said, “how did you cook it?”

“Cook it?”

He looked a bit vacant.

“Errr, I just ate it with some mustard and bread.”

He must have the constitution of an ox. I’ve been watching him for the last 24 hours and as far as I know he has shown no side effects from eating two pounds of raw pork. But what really irritates me is why I bother cooking at all, if serving up raw meat with mustard and carbs is all that’s needed to illicit a “lovely”.
