Eye Tips for Autumn

Last Updated on : 24th October 2024

The transition into autumn can affect our eyes due to changes in weather, daylight, and environmental conditions, such as humidity levels within households or workplaces. Here are some tips to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable throughout the autumnal months.

Low Autumn Sunlight

After the autumn equinox, the sun sits lower in the sky, reaching our eyes more directly, increasing the amount of UV radiation that enters our eyes. Even though the sun may not feel as intense or warm, we should wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays when outdoors. Alternatively, photochromic lenses (optical lenses that darken on exposure to UV) or clear lenses with 100% UV protection are available. Not only do these offer UV protection, they also help shield our eyes from wind and debris.

Dehydration, Screens and Dry Eyes

When outdoors, cool and windy weather can make our eyes dry out quicker as our tears can be wicked away from the surface. When we are indoors and engaged with digital screens for extended periods, we tend to blink less frequently which reduces the spread of tear film over our eye surface. This can lead to our eyes feeling uncomfortable and irritated. Therefore, it is important to take regular breaks looking away from devices, and remember to blink!

Hot air fans in the car, central heating systems and poor indoor humidity control may also cause certain ocular surface issues to flare up. Lubricating eyedrops can add hydration to the eye’s surface and give some relief. However, if you experience persistent dry eye symptoms, we recommend that you book an assessment with one of our specialist optometrists.

At Taylor-West & Co Battersea, we endeavour to investigate and understand the condition of your eye surface better with our comprehensive Dry Eye Assessments. This will involve:

  • A detailed discussion of your history and symptoms
  • Imaging of your eyelids and eyelashes
  • Upper and lower eyelid inner gland scans
  • Scan of your tear film
  • Use of diagnostic dyes to assess for any surface cell damage

Following an initial Dry Eye Consultation, we will formulate a personalised management plan. This may include self-care options, medical prescriptions and/or treatments in clinic administered by our optometrist. If you fall within the 85% of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction-related Dry Eye Disease, we may recommend treatment that is a combination of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT).

Eye Hygiene and Protection

Autumn brings about different viruses and also allergens, such as weed pollen and mould spores. To minimise the risk of eye infections and irritation, keep your hands and living areas clean, and avoid rubbing your eyes. If you wear contact lenses, proper care and hygiene is extra important.

When outdoors gardening or raking leaves, remember to shield your eyes from potential debris, dust, and plant material by wearing protective eyewear.

Comprehensive Eye Examinations for Long Term Eye Health

Regular eye examinations are essential for maintaining long-term eye health. At Taylor-West & Co Opticians, our specialist optometrists carry out comprehensive eye examinations not only to check your eyesight, but also to understand and monitor your eye health. Book an appointment with us via our website, get in touch via email or give us a call.
