Starbucks is becoming a pizza restaurant? So that will be three pizza restaurants all next door to one another? Weird

No it’s definitely next to the travel lodge, they’ve put a sign up already. Shame about goose island though....

Read on FB that it might be going where Goose Island is.

That's definitely closing and is opposite Waitrose so a good spot.

Browsing the other local jobs on offer it looks like Lidl is the only place that pays the London Living Wage

Gail’s is owned by a private equity house so I’m not surprised at the pay. I wonder what the industry average is? I’d imagine it’s roughly in line with other cafes, etc

I only looked because I'm nosey ;) .The balham jobs are not offering £10.20 - it's £1-2 less per hour, which adds up on that sort of wage. So paying just above the legal minimum but charging mega premium. Very nice food and atmosphere, but still.

Gail's is vastly overrated and very expensive for the service... And now I see how much they pay their staff, I found that shocking.

I didn’t even click on the link to the job advert...that’s disgraceful when you think that the ‘living wage’ for London is calculated as £10.20 per hour. Also, one tends to forget to tip when you pay upfront so they prob don’t make much on tips either.

Yep looks like they pay just above the National Minimum Wage of £7.83 per hour
The London Living Wage is £10.20 per hour

I was just thinking too when you see what they pay, no surprise the staff is so slow there!

I reckon it's a great spot to put a Gails or Megan's and the renovations look promising last time I saw. Ever since the Nightingale cafe a bit further along became Taro a few years ago the pressure has been on Delite on Ritherdon Road and that's small. There are several primary schools on the doorstep so sounds like they've done their research and I won't be surprised if the place is constantly rammed.

p.s. if it's a Gails, when you look at what they are paying the staff in the advertised jobs, £8/9ph, it does make their prices look pretty greedy though...

Just when you thought we couldn't get any more coffee shops/cafes in Balham..! This will make the school run incredibly difficult although I can't help thinking traffic/parking may increase around that area. The corner and high road has the most one-hour free parking spots in Balham.

Happy Days!

It was a pretty clapped-out newsagent. It's not the most promising spot, next to the Travelodge, but maybe the arrival of Gail's will raise the tone. The patisserie the other side of the road, Apple Blue, has been a good addition, as has the sushi place on the same side a little further down.
