Just avoid SimplyLofts or Build London. They were a nightmare for us a few years ago.

I used home tales for mine and they were excellent www.hometales.co.uk

*relating to The Loft King

Funnily enough, they didn’t give you any numbers to call of dis-satisfied customers?? I would *never* recommend them based on our personal experience. They have the FMB logo on their website, but try finding them via the ‘search members’ field on the actual FMB site.

Hi, we were very happy with Sam Rose (tel: 07876 564791) who did our loft and side-return a few years ago. A few things really stood out for us: 1) They quoted saying there would be no extra charges unless we changed the spec. Very often I hear with friends that the builder needs to charge more as "something unexpected" came up. Sam was confident enough about building that he knew what would come up, and if wrong he would absorb the cost. 2) When there was a deluge of dirt, they would clean our neighbours' windows which they appreciated ! 3) They kept us informed on progress (we were not living there at the time) 4) They came back after they had finished the job if we had any issues/complaints, even if nothing to do with them.
Given all the stories I hear of other builders, we were very fortunate. And they did an excellent job.
Hope it goes well for you !

I am just finishing up using Landmark Lofts, happy to relay my experiences if you PM me.

Another bad experience with South London Lofts. Sloppy, unprofessional, take shortcuts - and we are still waiting for them to finish the job! If you want anything other than the very basic package, the costs rocket. Another builder has had to rectify several of their mistakes. The structural calcs they provided were also incorrect. If I were to do it again, I would definitely go down the architect route, not design and build.

I'd tend to suggest getting the project designed and then going out for formal quotations (rather than the "all in one" that many companies offer).

This doesn't stop you negotiating with your preferred contractor, but doesn't wed you to use a builder who may not be competitive.

We're a chartered building consultancy who employ architectural designers, cost consultants, project managers and party wall surveyors so can deal with most statutory requirements before getting a builder on board.

Happy to discuss by phone or email: office@whiteandlloyd.com . We are happy to provide a no obligation quotation based on the information provided.

Regards,

White & Lloyd Ltd

Following with interest.... We are in the early stages of planning ours and debating whether to go with a 'loft company' or architect and separate building firm.
White Knight - would be interested to have a chat about loft king and the work they did for you...

We used Scott McCabe in the summer of 2015 to do our planning permission. Once that was obtained we asked them when they could start. After delaying us, they told us, via a letter, they were too busy to service SW11. We felt very let down as they had led us to believe they could do the work so do check if you decide on them...

Anyway I'm pleased to say we finished our loft last week! We used Loft King and couldn't be happier. Happy to chat and even show you around ours.
Loft King were recommended by a colleague, they gave us a long list of references of which I randomly called 4 and all were very positive too.

Good luck!

Just to add that Build London were connected with South London Lofts at the time we had our loft done and, although our contract was with South London Lofts, we had Build London guys doing quite a lot of the work.

Great service, great work and great blokes.

Hope that helps.

Another one to avoid would be any company involving Ray or Jane Hampshire, who used to trade as Atticus Lofts. They did our loft conversion, and we had such problems that we took them to the small claims court (and won). Atticus has been dissolved, and maybe they've retired, but run a mile if you come across them.
