Re: Are most boys still leaving Finton at 7+ or have things changed?

Another reason why some boys leave some prep schools is due to senior school destinations. If you want your boy to move to senior school at 13 (mainly boarding but some day options) then you will need to be at a prep that goes to year 8. So that's not really a reflection of size of the prep school, ...

Re: Wanted: 5 Year old Girls lightweight bike?

I have a red Islabike Beinn 20 small - they do 2 frame sizes, the wheels are the same size. Our son was quite small for his age so we got this for his 6th birthday - its very lightweight - and would suit a 5+ year old. Ideally we would like £275 for it.

Re: Finton/ Thomas's/ Hornsby

You don't say how old your son is but I assume you are thinking about a reception place. Leaving aside the pros and cons of each school for the moment as they are all good schools, it is worth considering what you would like for your son for senior schools or you may find yourself having to move him...

Re: Carpet Shops

I have just used Carpet Base on Cavendish Rd to carpet 2 bedrooms - super helpful and quick! And competitive price-wise. They are a family business who have been there a long time. Nice to use someone local and not a chain! Good luck.

Re: Price for Chimney Removal

Crikey I wish I hadn't clicked on this thread as we paid significantly more to have a double chimney stack removed from our loft - included front and rear chimneys and the bit where they merge (if that makes sense!). Also included cost of the steel to support the chimney stack above the roof line wh...

Re: Cornwall - your best tips?

A day in Falmouth is good - the Maritime Museum is great and the 'vibe' in the town is much less hectic than St Ives, the seagulls are friendlier too. :) Gardens of Heligan are SO worth a visit. For more activity based day there's a new water park at Retallack which looks amazing (not been yet but d...

Re: Boys 8th Birthday - 'Survival' party -

Sharky & George! Costly but great. My kids have been to several S&G survival parties and hosted our own, mainly on Wandsworth Common but also Clapham Common and Wimbledon Common. Well worth it. Does your child have someone they could share the party with which would help with the costs?

Re: Refurb of existing loft extension - any suggestions?

Good evening! We are in the middle of a loft refurb - started as a new bathroom, new insulation (no insulation there!), new windows etc. It has grown as the job has progressed as we have uncovered a few 'horrors'. Our loft was done 25-30 years ago when building regs aren't what they are now and the ...

Re: Godchild presents boys ages 6-10???

How could I forget to mention Roald Dahl?!!?! The Book People do sets which make a nice gift - although they are paperbacks so won't last like a hardback, it will be very loved though!

Re: Godchild presents boys ages 6-10???

Boys can be tricky but a lovely book to keep is always a nice present, esp from a Godparent. I have boys in the age range you mention and rather than a paperback (which wouldn't be treasured) they might appreciate a 'gift' edition of Harry Potter, Gullivers Travels, Treasure Island, Rudyard Kipling ...

Re: Summer babies- delaying admission to primary school

There is no perfect solution to this - obviously as nothing is perfect! Someone will have to be the youngest. Does anyone have the answer as to why the current legal position (of a child starting school in the term in which he/she turns 5 not at the start of the academic year) is not applied? My und...

Re: Summer babies- delaying admission to primary school

Oh and I couldn't agree more about the loss of the time to play, explore, nap...well just be. They are still very young children. My youngest is not *that* happy about going to school - but that would be the same even if in the academic year group below.

Re: Summer babies- delaying admission to primary school

I think this whole thing about starting school early is because basically majority of population loves that as it's free childcare essentially. Ditto the rationale for longer school day. Yes yes! Although I don't 'blame the parents' more the fact that if a parent (let's face it, the mother) decides...

Re: Summer babies- delaying admission to primary school

I have spring/summer babies, my youngest being August born. I am summer born myself. Whilst I would not have held any of my children back a full academic year I fail to see why the law cannot be properly applied - as it stands no child needs to be at school until the term in which that child turns 5...
