Re: What does prep offer in terms of study skills?

We moved our child for Yr 6 from an ‘Outstanding’ state primary. We’d been happy with it but our child was starting to not do her best in a class of 32 (including 2 with very special needs). We noticed a Massive difference in her learning in yr 6 at the independent school, and the sport was at anoth...

Re: Would you pay for primary or secondary education if you can't do both

If you decide on Independent, great schools to look at are those that provide a large proportion of bursaries, such as Latymer Upper and Dulwich. There are the benefits of great, academic schools but with a wide range of social backgrounds.

Tax adviser needed

Hi I’m an ‘accidental landlord’ and am considering selling my former house that im renting out as it’s making little money and will soon make a loss (it has a large mortgage and my payments will rise significantly in June). However, I need some advice on pros and cons of selling, Capital gains tax a...

Re: Are independent schools better than state? Primary.

I think it depends on the child and the schools near you. We sent our daughter to state primary until year 6 and then went private. She went to a fantastic, ‘Ofsted Outstanding’ primary, 2 minutes walk from our house where she and we made some great, local friends. I don’t think you always get that ...

Notre dame Cobham or Emanuel?

Hi. We’re trying to get views on Emanuel vs Notre Dame. We live in Raynes Park, so time wise, ND is quicker to get to if driving, otherwise similar but on a private coach. We’re apprehensive about our daughter travelling on a commuter train, especially on a day like today when they’re cancelled! :sh...

Re: Can I evict my cousin from a shared ownership house?

Another option could be for him to rent out a room and you have the rental income? Means he could keep the house and you get your share. Or you both rent it out (as a holiday home ?) and can then stay there yourselves for a holiday!

Re: Please can we order a taxi home for our babysitters.

Very nice, considerate request. However, like many posts on here, assumes everyone is living on the same high budget.

Re: Partner saying no to me not returning to work to be a full time mum.

You have got some really good, balanced feedback above. I had 13 months off which was great and went back 3 days a week to a senior finance role for both financial and personal reasons. I’ve always been very ambitious and get my self- validation from my work. I always felt like I was resented by qui...

Re: daughter not invited to party

This is tough and quite hard to understand with these numbers- if you’re inviting 8, why not 2 more? Is there a chance the invite could’ve got lost in her bag? The mum might be wondering why you’ve not replied? You could check with her - say something like ‘ I just wanted to check we hadn’t missed a...

Re: Notre Dame School Cobham/Sutton High

Hi Thanks for your reply. Yes, she has got a place for year 6 since I posted! As you say, great way to miss the 11+, or at least be more relaxed about it! It’s just that with Covid, we haven’t been able to see the school ‘in action’, although have had a tour, so can’t get a ‘feel’ for the place and ...

Notre Dame School Cobham/Sutton High

Hi We’re considering sending our daughter to Notre Dame for year 6 to then get automatic entry into the senior school. Whilst pretty academic, she doesn’t have much confidence in her abilities and gets very nervous in tests and this could spoil how she does in the 11+ Does anyone have any knowledge ...

Re: Splitting inheritance

I am in a similar situation and in the very early days of our relationship said that I would like to leave all of my assets to our child, expecting that my partner would divide their assets amongst the three children. My two step children will ultimately inherit a substantial amount from their other...

Re: in laws offering to pay for son not daughter schools fees

Wow! Are they perhaps from a culture where women are seen as inferior? Trying to understand the thinking behind this in Britain in the 21st century.

Like most of the other opinions, I would gratefully accept the money on the condition that it goes towards funding both your children’s education.

Sorry to jump on this post but does anyone also have good information about secondary schools in those areas, both state and private? Thanks
