Re: What breaks are you allowed in hispitality?

Yes, it’s legal. And the 20 mins can be unpaid too.
It’s the bare minimum, but sadly the reality for many workers - not just young people in temporary summer jobs.

Re: Taking the children on an extended holiday

Definitely go. We lived in my husband’s country for years, and I brought the children back to the uk for an extended break every year. This was the norm for everyone I knew in similar circumstances. I really the valued the time to relax and settle in to routines here, visit friends and family and my...

Re: Summer Holiday Youth Café comes to Furzedown Rec

What a great idea! There’s so little on offer for this age group over the summer, I hope it’s a successful initiative.

Re: Football Zorbing

Just before lockdown in 2020 (so I don’t know if they’re still operating) we had one at Dulwich College Sports Club. Super-easy to organise and it was great fun. I got all the info and did the booking through the sports centre website.

Re: Please can we order a taxi home for our babysitters.

I always ask if they need a taxi, or if very local walk them home. It just feels like a courtesy.
A taxi, if needed, can easily take an hour out of their pay for the night and I know without a doubt which one of us is better placed to afford it.

Re: ASD Friendship

There's an organisation in Clapham Junction called SEN Talk that runs a youth club for teenagers with ASD. It might be worth having a look at what they offer. For girls, there is an informal social group running locally for girls with neurodevelopmental diagnoses including ASD and ADHD. You can cont...

Re: Getting rid of EHCP

You might want to consider asking for changes in provision rather than ceasing the plan altogether. For example if there are currently TA hours written into the plan, seeking to change this to use of technology or support in a more defined area of learning. Needs change with age/demands of stages of...

Re: Getting rid of EHCP

Maintaining the EHCP is evidence based, and with the state of finding being what it is the local authority would be happy to cease the plan. At the next review you need to present evidence that the plan is no longer needed. This would essentially be that the outcomes in the plan have been met, and t...

Re: how long do we put up with the classroom disruption before we say something?

‘Especially in a private school, we are paying for things like this to be dealt with seamlessly.’ Things like this? You’re talking about a child. Some horribly dehumanising language here. ‘part of me wishes there were a separate track for kids with genuine disorders.’ It’s astonishingly hard to get ...

Re: Secondary school for girls with ASD

There’s also a group on Facebook called Lavender specifically for parents of girls with ASD, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental diagnoses. It’s S/SW London based and most of the families have experience of mainstream.

Spray painting furniture

Can anyone recommend a local workshop/person who could spray paint furniture? I’m looking to give a set of dining chairs a new lease of life in the garden.

Returning to ballet at 11

My daughter gave up ballet a few years ago for a few different reasons. She was about to do grade 2 at the time. She’d like to start up again but she’s 11 now and I don’t know where to look for a suitable class. She wouldn’t enjoy being with younger children and is not exactly a beginner. One possib...

Re: potential foreign job offer for husband, seeking advice

Former expat here. Sounds like your husband is thinking of this purely in terms of a new job/career progression for him, when an overseas posting is so much more than that. That’s a huge problem, but not really a relocation problem. Is he in the habit of acting as if the rest of the family don’t mat...

Re: Applying to schools out of borough with an EHCP?

If your son has an EHCP the process for applying for primary is different and the criteria for school selection are different to a standard reception class application. The key issue is whether the school can meet his needs (as described in the ehcp) and whether it is the closest school to you that ...

Re: SEND EHCP form for children with disabilities

It depends whereabouts in the borough you are. At primary age I really would advise staying local if you can - you can pm if you like and I can share the info I have if it's relevant to you.
