For grease stains, Ecover built-in brush stain remover is the bomb: https://www.ecover.com/products/stain-remover/ For the orange aspect - do you know what it is? If tomato-based, once washed, dry it in direct sunlight, which should fade it hopefully to the point of invisibility.

I have friends whose daughter goes there, but they live in Stoneleigh. I get the impression most, if not all, of her friends/classmates are local to the school.

I’m a pretty relaxed parent and even I would be pretty horrified by this. Like everyone else, I think your MIL’s reaction is a reflection of the fact that underneath she knows it was completely the wrong thing to do. When you’re both calm again I’d be having a serious chat with her.
