Re: How places were allocated for Wandsworth primary schools 2024

The catchment areas have increased quite a bit across most of the schools. Whilst most of the popular schools are over subscribed, generally the catchment areas are higher than their historical averages. I remember over the last 10-12 years where the majority of popular schools had to be a stone’s t...

Re: Who else feels outraged about what councils have done to Wandsworth Bridge Rd and Streatham  High Rd

The principle is correct but poorly executed. We live BTC and I am sick of the number of cars cutting through the roads to get to their destination. Over the last 10 years, it has got progressively worse. Just take a look at school rush hour. Most of the schools around here have small catchment area...

Re: Eaton house (Girls) vs Broomwood

Assuming you have no issues with Private Equity in school education; same owners so little difference apart from location and branding. If you live Clapham side of Wandsworth, go Eaton… if you live Balham side of Wandsworth, go Broomwood. If you understand the Private Equity model and/ or generally ...

Northcote Road - new shops

Does anyone know what is replacing the old Brew restaurant and Mountain Warehouse? I see a lot of activity so assume a new tenant has been found… I also noticed All Bar One has now closed. Is this for refurbishment or is there a new tenant on the horizon? Any insight would be appreciated. (No doubt ...

Re: Out of control schoolchildren on St Johns Road

This post is being hijacked. The original conversation is how St John’s Road is now a no-go zone afterschool. @Homemaker - if you have an issue with a particular school, pls start a separate thread to address. Back to the thread; what we can do to address the unruly mob of kids on St John’s Road? Th...

Re: Out of control schoolchildren on St Johns Road

The fact McDonalds has a security guard at 3pm highlights there is a problem with the “restaurant”. All a security guard does is control the mob within the “restaurant”. But what about the street outside? Maybe McDonald's should close their doors between 330-5pm… something needs to be done to protec...

Re: Out of control schoolchildren on St Johns Road

Yesterday, there was definitely an unruly mob of teenagers causing trouble on St John’s Road… the usual; a couple of boys not in school uniform on a Boris or Lime bike accompanied by their posse (in school uniform). You can only deduce some of them have been excluded from school so just waiting for ...

Re: Eaton house vs broomwood

Unfortunately, Broomwood and Eaton are much of a muchness now. They are both owned by the same Private Equity firm, so the badge will be different but underneath the bonnet will be the same engine. I am indifferent on the debate between private vs state, but I am uncomfortable about the Private Equi...

Re: Another 8% fee increase at Hornsby House school

If your local state primary school is excellent, I don’t understand why you’d go private, especially if it’s owned by private equity. Private Equity use debt and tax havens to maximise profits. With interest rates rising, more and more of your school fees is paying off their debt. I recall a good co...

Re: Private Primary - how to decide (Broomwood/Hornsby/Thomas's)

Some interesting comments here. I believe a number of prep schools around this area are owned by Private Equity. I do not have strong view on private vs state education or even Trust vs For-profit. But I am uncomfortable with the private equity business model, especially in an area as important as e...

Re: Thomas’ parents - STOP PARKING on YELLOW LINES

Why do parents do the school run in Zone 2? This entitled mentality isn’t limited to private schools. Just take a look at the number of parents at Belleville Primary dropping off their kids in restricted zone. Some even park directly on the zigzag line outside the gate… What surprises me is that no ...

Re: Northern line extension to Clapham Junction set to be investigated

About time TfL invested more money south of the river. I have always wondered why CJ station was allowed to remain open at peak times; overcrowding got to a point that I expected serious injury or fatalities. Don’t get me started on how dilapidated the infrastructure is…. Walking down the dark wet t...

Re: The old petit bateau is going to become…

This makes absolutely no sense to me. So we are replacing a baby shop with another optician. Is NappeyValley changing from young family into OAP demographic?! Or is it some tax scheme as Julian highlighted like the candy stores on Oxford Str. I can only assume it’s the drive of Private Equity in tha...

Re: Sushi Shop UK Coming to the Northcote Road

Great news and adds some more variety from burgers and pizza shops. However, I do miss Colette!

But it is in quite close proximity to the other Japanese restaurant across from Bollingbroke… wonder if different type of clientele… ie. One is more for dining whilst new shop is a deli type offering?

Re: Fall in class sizes

Yes, it’s a trend across all major cities around the world. Plenty of broadsheets have been highlighting one of the impacts of Covid. Then we had Brexit and the post 2012 surge now reducing (this surge was mainly driven at the time from Europe as some of their economies struggled in aftermath of the...
