Re: Can a solicitor mummy ever achieve a work/family life happy balance?

Most of the replies you've had so far have been in relation to city corporate law so thought I'd widen the pool a bit - although it's not much better news. I'm a divorce lawyer. In my field it is possible to work alone but you first need to go to law school, get a training contract (against very sti...

Re: Streatham & Clapham Prep School

Which other prep schools are you looking at as on the whole our local ones have quite a 'mixed bag' of results when it comes to next schools?

Re: Streatham & Clapham Prep School

My daughter joined SCP last September from another local prep school and we could not be happier with the school. Our daughter is absolutely thriving there, she's made great friends, does a wide range of extra-curricular activities and has made huge advances academically under the guidance of some w...

Re: Broomwood - parents opinions please

Has Broomwood now dropped its plan to expand the Upper School to run to 16? They bought a neighbouring building behind to try and do this but didn't get planning. When I last spoke to the head they were still trying to find a way to do it. If so then 11/13+ prep is going to be very low priority. It ...

Re: Broomwood - parents opinions please

As you've noted upthread Hornsby is too oversubscribed for you to get places. It is worth asking why Broomwood always seems to have spaces for kids to join. My own experience is only of the lower school as my children left at 7+ so we never experienced Upper school/Northcote lodge. You are correct t...

Re: divorce, charge on the property question

Unless the order specifically states a point in time for the value to be determined then it will be 35% of the current value.

Re: Which school to get in to St Paul / LCSG later?

Agree with what others have told you that the reason schools around here don't send kids to SPG or City is that JAGS is at the same level academically and much closer geographically (and has a much better site than City). Also do bear in mind that school's reputations can change a lot in a fairly sh...

Are you suggesting using you rather than a lawyer to complete Form E or would you need a lawyer too?

Re: Mark Warner - surcharge on balance paid ski holiday

Makes me wonder whether Mark Warner are in trouble. Whilst I understand their T & C give them the ability to do this surely it is an absolute last resort for them as PR wise it is a disaster and catastrophic for brand loyalty. MW's contracts do allow some form of refund for cancellation up to 14...

Re: Careers advice for young girl

She believes that based on her expected GCSE grades that she will be unable to get into a "decent" university and that most high flying careers will be closed off to her. This is probably true. And if it is not true for her then it must, by definition be true, for the majority of people a...

Re: Careers advice for young girl

One of the things I personally find faulty with that way of thinking is that it relies on a sterotypical (also sexist) view of what women want in life. It assumes that women just want to get married, have kids and then lounge around all day spending husband's cash. It's hugely reductive. In reality ...

Re: Thomas's Clapham, Streatham and Clapham Prep offers

Yes there really is quite a bit of moving about. In my DD's year at her old school 4 kids moved out of London mid-year and were quickly replaced with 4 new kids all from other local preps (including both Newton and Thomas's). Then 4 more left at the end of the year all heading to other local indepen...
