Re: The new £3.9m Food waste collections - a massive cost to the taxpayer, this is how to return your bins to the counci

Education is certainly needed - and one point about batteries.  We have a charger which cost about £12 hanging on the wall for AA and AAA batteries.  We use Duracell rechargeables and it has saved us a fortune over the years.

Re: The new £3.9m Food waste collections - a massive cost to the taxpayer, this is how to return your bins to the counci

I really feel for you - it must be absolutely exhausting to be against everything.  I assume you know that food waste recycling occurs in cities all over the world - I can't be bothered to check the local details, but it normally goes into an anaerobic digester to generate clean energy - you know, p...

Paris restaurant

Can anyone please recommend a really nice restaurant for dinner in central Paris? White tablecloths, tables not too close together, interesting freshly cooked food and not Michelin starred (we find them far too pretentious). Thanks in advance.

Renting a meeting room

Can anyone please suggest where within reach of Nightingale Lane we might rent a room one evening for a meeting of about a dozen people. St Luke’s isn’t available. We just need a table and chairs. Thanks in advance.

Re: Food waste collections for all in Wandsworth

Readysteadycook - let me help you, at least over the climate “scam”. Radiant energy arrives from the sun at short (visible and ultraviolet) wavelengths. About 30% of the incoming energy is radiated / reflected back to space from ice sheets, deserts, concrete buildings etc at long (infrared) waveleng...

Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

Another golden oldie - at 20mph 20 miles takes 60 minutes so 5 miles takes 15 minutes ........ it's obviously not the speed limit (which is the subject of this thread) causing your 50 minute journey.  My guess is road works and/or (whatever you say) more traffic - unless you are taking a bizarre rou...

Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

Muddyboots - of course you are right, my apologies. It’s just sometimes so frustrating that people seem unwilling to consider lifestyle sacrifices to accommodate others - we do all have to share the same city / planet. And Another Golden Oldie - 5 miles doesn’t take 50 minutes at 20mph - there are p...

Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

@muddyboots - you're absolutely right to say " it’s LEGAL to drive ! It’s A LEGAL ACTIVITY AND YOU ACT AS IF people are declaring some kind of dirty secret and criminal activity " - but actually it's not legal to drive above the speed limit - so (with your evident respect for the law) you ...

Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

I’m sorry but if you are saying it takes an hour and a half to go 16 miles when there’s little traffic then honestly I doubt if you can tell the time! And I’d lay odds that not all of your journey is in 20mph zones.

Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

I think the trouble you (juliantenniscoach) have obviously taken to check statistics should be respected, and I for one would not quarrel with them in general.  To me though (although I accept not to others) the issue is different - do we want our cities to be increasingly dominated by more and more...

Re: New 20mph zone on the A205?

This is obviously a completely life changing catastrophe - I don’t know exactly, but if the distance is 1.5 miles (which I think is about right, but happy to be corrected) then at an average of 35mph it takes 2.025 minutes and at 20 mph it’s 1.500 minutes.

Re: Who else feels outraged about what councils have done to Wandsworth Bridge Rd and Streatham  High Rd

Oh muddyboots .... of course it's not free to own a car but ...... it's not about that, it's about the marginal cost of using a shared resource, in this case a particular road, and for all practical purposes that is zero, except possibly at the entry / exit points of the charging zones, which doesn'...

Re: Who else feels outraged about what councils have done to Wandsworth Bridge Rd and Streatham  High Rd

@muddyboots Well perhaps you were not paying attention, which I guess is understandable at university. The Tragedy of the Commons applies to a resource that is free at the point of use (ie has a marginal cost of zero), which for all practical purposes is the case for road users. It’s the same reason...
