Help - I've never hosted a dinner party!

A bit of a daft plea.... Please tell me what you served when you last had friends over for a casual dinner! I get myself into a real pickle having people over for meals, as I never know what to serve. I've "done" Christmas and Sunday lunches, as I've just followed the tried and tested form...
