Re: Talk to me about commuting from Balham

We find commuting from Balham and Wandsworth Common to Victoria via Battersea Park. mainland do-able but stressful. Even when there isn't a strike the trains are often delayed, cancelled or turn up with only 4 carriages. It's an effin' "rip hair out" nightmare and not a great way to start the day. I...

Re: How much do you spend on a birthday party present ages 10-12?

Thanks all. It was the parent who suggested the £50 gift. Perhaps not realising how expensive it was, but just wanted to check in case I was on another planet!

How much do you spend on a birthday party present ages 10-12?

I usually spend about £10-20 on a present to send my kids off with to their friends' birthday parties, depending on how good a friend they are,but I've been suggested to buy something that costs £50  . Is that the norm around here? What do others think reasonable and am I being a cheap-skate?

Re: Trinity Restaurant to open new restaurant on Bellevue Road

Me too Dudette, especially since Italian is the main kind of food I cook at home. I think we are already well catered for in the Italian food area - franco manca is the best in my opinion despite the original guy having sold out to a hedge fund.

Re: Dull question....

I've recently used Asda brand carpet spot cleaner (black spray bottle with purple writing) to clean up a messy cat puke :x . It did a really good job despite my low expectations.

Re: Stained glass in front door

There is a place just near you at 152 Broomwood Road. Never used them but might be a good place to start. I've heard good things about a place in Tooting but I don't have the address to hand.

Re: Screaming child in back garden

How old are the kids and do you know what sort of situation are they living in - social housing or private? I would also hate to listen to that noise. Even with a special needs child you would not expect to hear them screaming for ages. Did you hear anyone trying to help the child get over the screa...

Re: Aircraft Noise

Whereabouts do you live firstimer? We are on the south of Wandsworth common and it doesn't bother us - we see loads of them heading into Heathrow but only hear it if actually awake but the noise isn't enough to wake us up. Pollution is part of living in London whichever bit you live in, but we can j...

Re: Jane Ellison is out

I don't know how to do quotes, but this comment had me: "the rich laugh as they hide their cash in offshore accounts etc." Apparently I'm "rich" and so are most of my friends and neighbours and nobody hides anything in offshore accounts. You couldn't even if you wanted to. It's the Phillip Greens an...

Re: Northcote summer fete in doubt

I doubt any local multi-millionaires want to put their hand in their pocket and be attacked as "tory scum". It needs to be a business that is making big money in the local area (wasn't it Hamptons who sponsored it in previous years, surely they are still making a packet?) or we pay to get in, like a...

Re: Jane Ellison is out

I'm one of kids who would have shouted "Tory scums" - 20+ years ago. Not many of them will be shouting that when they are in their 40s being on over £80k a year ("the scums, top 5%") and actually having to, shock horror, work and pay tax, school fees and not expect life to be for free. Interesting d...

Oh noooo, just seen this. That's such a pity especially since we could all do with a bit of old fashioned fun and cheering up right now!

Re: Volunteers needed for Home-Start

Hi, I'm interested in doing this. Can I just ask - the parents you are trying to help - are they willing for people to be involved or are they made to get help for whatever reason, eg to get benefits? I wouldn't want to be involved if it was dangerous or people unwilling and making me feel like the ...
