Re: To Board or Not To Board?

Boarding Schools are surely only for people who are unable to bring up their children (both parents travelling overseas where no schools available) or unwilling. Why else would you abandon your children into the care of strangers ? Children are so precious and their childhood so short and yet some p...

Re: Get your education questions answered

@SW12Pops Thanks for the further insights and clarification. My only concern lies with the assertion that the teaching is always better in Independent Schools due to extra resources. This may be supported by inflated exam results, but is not by the performance on leaving school and attending Univers...

Re: Get your education questions answered

@SW12Pops You do make a huge generalisation that Independent pupils are “just taught better all round. How to pass exams, how to think, how to problem solve etc etc.” However the considerable evidence totally contradicts this – there is little doubt that State School pupils do better than Independen...

Re: Get your education questions answered

Interesting- so you are saying that the Independent pupils are taught how to pass exams well but when they start to have to to learn by themselves, and compete on a level playing field they struggle against the more resilient state school pupils? That to me is not a great advert for Independent scho...

Re: Get your education questions answered

I would be interested in hearing the answer to why State School students do better at university than students from Independent Schools. We are always told that Independent schools help our children become better independent learners and more resilient but the evidence is the opposite. From the Dail...

Re: Schools Guide -grammar schools

My advice would to get up one morning and do the commute yourself.
We tried - it was over an hour door to door.
Then ask if you want your child wasting 2 hours of their life commuting to school everyday for the next 7 years.

A few think it’s worth it - but they don’t have to do the commute.

Re: Sixth Form Physics and Maths questions

What were his exact grades at GVSE maths and physics ? There is quite a big step up from GCSE to A Level and most good schools would recommend at least a 7, particularly in subjects like Maths where the learning curve is steep. Most 6th forms want as many pupils as possible and would allow students ...

Re: Honeywell School or local private prep?

It is always best to look at the evidence rather than apply common sense. The studies on whether small class size makes a difference to outcomes are inconclusive at best with most saying it makes little difference - google it and you could probably find a report that agrees with your view but genera...

Re: Honeywell School or local private prep?

Firstly Honeywell, as an example, gets more Children into Allyns than any of the local prep schools both in terms of gross numbers and % of children applying. If you want a mixed independent secondary bare that in mind. Ask local tutors - as many children come from Private Preps as local state schoo...

Re: Bolingbroke Academy

The original poster asked for opinions of current parents / guardians at the Bolingbroke. A quick review of this long thread shows that 7 parents have responded. Their views are 5 very positive responses about the Bolingbroke which offered advice on how to deal with the issue - generally good advice...

Re: These are best and worst secondary schools in Wandsworth for pupil progress

@rootinfortoorin Schools that academically select their pupils will get lots of A/A* but this tells you nothing, it merely confirms their intake. For example Graveney selects 70 pupils and these pupils should all get A* in everything and would achieve these results almost regardless of the school th...

Re: Some questions on applying to both Wandsworth and Lambeth schools

@southlondondaddy How do you choose what to have for breakfast each morning? By the time you've consulted and considered all the options do you find it's time for bed again?

Re: Thoughts on Bolingbroke's first results?

A friends child has moved to Bolingbroke for 6th form and shared this with me. http://arkbolingbrokeacademy.org/sites/default/files/newsletters/Courageous%20Hound%201_2.pdf Reading between the lines 80 children are starting the Sixth Form, the majority have stayed on. The entry criteria for A level ...
