Re: Honest feedback on Balham for a family?

I would agree with the renting suggestion. I know you say that you risk being in a worse position if you still cannot afford a house in the area but one of the main things putting pressure on your budget and ability to buy in the area is the need to be within catchment of a decent school. If you ren...

Re: Ibiza in October: Good idea?

Been a couple of times at the start of October without children and the weather has always been perfect sun-bathing weather. The season is still going and everything is open including beach clubs etc. You'll have an amazing time I'm sure.

Re: Friend drinking and smoking whilst pregnant

It is really not your place to judge. Each to their own. It is not uncommon to have the odd glass of wine when pregnant and as long as you're not getting drunk then it's not as though it's totally forbidden. It was only the constant feeling of sickness that stopped me having wine with dinner I think...

Re: A what age did you let your kids go up and down the stairs?

We never used stair gates and never had any accidents. Kids tend to be careful and nervous naturally around heights. I remember seeing this great study which showed crawling babies skirting around a perspex section of a floor as they though they would fall through. Fascinating. Anyway, from my exper...

Re: Anyone else annoyed at the excessive 'settling in' period for reception in primary school penalising the least well

I agree that it seems excessive. Our state school does not do this thank goodness! First day is a half day and then it's business as usual. I also think that it's right for parents to speak up especially for practices that are difficult for working parents as they are often over-looked in the state ...

Re: Best nurseries for a Broomwood Hall school run

There is this new nursery opening in September very close to Broomwood Hall. Such a wonderful idea... if it was around when mine were toddlers I'd have definitely been interested in the concept...

Hi, just a thought but have you tried Oxfam? They have a huge number of wedding dresses online and also have some dedicated bridal shops dotted around the country. You could get a worn once designer dress for under £500 easily...

Re: Wellness Visits

Check with your daughter's school. They have general health checks in school for height, weight etc. It's usually in reception to begin with and then followed up in later years.

Re: Would you take a job if you knew you were pregnant with #2?

I wouldn't think about it from a 'what's fair' perspective. Just what is right for you. If it's a new job within the same company I would take it without a second thought. Better job, better money, career progression etc would mean that it's right for you right now. You don't know what's round the c...

Dull question....

Sorry for the terribly dull Good Housekeeping style question  but.... What spot cleaning carpet products would you recommend? We have recently had new carpets fitted throughout our house and with 2 kids and a dog I'm already finding marks here and there. It's too soon to justify having them cl...

Re: C - Section at St Georges

I doubt you would be asked to leave if you don't want to. I had a planned c-section with my second at St Thomas' and whilst I was told that I was free to go the next day, it felt quite daunting because I had a toddler at home. When it came time for me to be discharged, the midwife could tell I was f...

Re: School trips

At our state school they tend to ask for around £5 voluntary contribution and any costs over an above that are met by the school. Our school goes to Vauxhall city farm every year and they appear to charge £99 for a class of 30 kids... https://vauxhallcityfarm.org/documents/2016/01/schools-brochure-2...

Re: Meteor St site of Belleville

There are clubs before and after school at both sites. They change every term. There isn't any provision to transfer from one site to another for the clubs as not really enough time but there's no need to as clubs run at both sites.

Re: Can a solicitor mummy ever achieve a work/family life happy balance?

Have to agree with everything else everyone has said. My hubby is a lawyer and also a number of my friends are. The legal profession is such an antiquated one and most definitely not family friendly, to women or men for that matter! Most women I know have left their law firms once they have had chil...

Re: Could an accountant answer a very simple question for me?

I agree that it seems wrong, but it isn't really an accounting or VAT question, more what you agreed that the 14% would be calculated on in the contract. Theoretically it could say 14% of anything, it is just a way for them to calculate their fees. If it does say that it is 14% of the gross builders...
