Ball Games Area - Chivalry Road

Postby storm35 » Wed Jan 16, 2019 8:36 pm

Last year the ball games area behind the Chivalry Road playground underwent a refurbishment with the council calling it a community project for all to enjoy. Fast forward six months later and to my and my friends dismay, this area is now being hired out to private clubs during the week. Our sons are quite often finding now that their little hang out after school is now closed for private hire and they can no longer play there. What makes this a slightly more bitter pill to swallow is during council elections last year, our local council highlighted this as one of their sells to show that they were investing to improve our area for the kids. In fact I received a flyer through my door yesterday, and on it they have put this ball games area (with photo) as their first bullet point, once again highlighting it as a successful investment in "community projects"! I think its a real shame. Boys in particular love to go there and play football after school and dont have many places to go for free. Its a place where all ages come together from different schools and learn to organise themselves into teams and play a good old game of footie, and now its the same old story - it looks nice so they've decided to make some money from it and take it away from the local kids.

I am pleased to report the council are giving back free after school access to the Ball Court, from the hours of 4-6.
Thank you to Peter Dawson, Louise Calland and Alex Richards-Jones, for taking speedy action on this.
However I still think a lot more free access needs to be allowed, especially at weekends and school holidays.
It’s fantastic to see local children and their parents and carers coming together over a ball game, and organising themselves into teams and just being able to play.

That is great thanks NorthcoteRoadLover. Appreciate very much the council's speedy response on this and totally agree with you re weekends and school holidays. I accept there are opportunities whilst the kids are in school, but would be perfectly balanced if the area was kept free as implied when the kids are not in school. Thanks again!

We too were shocked to discover this when my husband took our boys for their usual football game only to be told they can’t use it! We too received a flyer highlighting how this pitch was going to be improved for the benefit of the community but clearly the council have other ideas! Great we have it back from 4 to 6pm but I think they need to review weekend use too to make it more available to the community (as was the original intention!) rather than hiring it out to private businesses. I am ‘all’ for supporting local business ventures but not at the expense of our community!

Free use between 4-6pm only is not enough during weekends!!!
As opposed to school days, children are free all day long at weekends, so free availability should reflect that!
Can’t believe community resources are so restrictive for free use!!

It would be wonderful too if the Chivalry Road playground could have some loos added. It would be lovely to go there and not have to watch yet another poor child relieve themselves in the bushes that other children play in.
