HORMONE - ADVICE HELP !

Postby lucyhs » Sat Feb 02, 2019 4:17 pm

Hello,

I am wondering if someone could best advise me,
I have recently been to see an expensive Harley Street horomone specialist doctor ( in order to try to cure my PMT!),

To cut a story short, she took a wide range of blood tests & it turned out that I have extremely high estrogen levels.  (aged 39,)
The cure for this, is she has prescribed a 200mg progesterone lozenge (synthetic) medication in order to apparently counter balance things out- taken  daily.
In fairness I have only been taking it for 9 days – HOWEVER, I feel  I have gained weight and that my boobs feel like a balloon..

At this moment of time- I frankly feel that I would rather put up with my pmt – which lets be honest only lasts about 4 days.. and live with the imbalance rather than feeling like death - and hoping/ waiting for this levelling to work out…or perhaps I am being too inpatient...

A friend had said that she would not go near synthetic hormones…!
I am supposed to take this for 2 months and then do a review with the specialist doctor….
What would you do ? Carry on sticking it out and see if things change
OR – stop it now and hope that your body gets back to how it was and find a herbalist/alternative route...…
I did spend about £700 on it – but surely it is all about wanting to feel better and I feel like **** since starting on this medication!
I would be grateful for any comments!  x

Hi Lucyhs
Which clinic did you go to? Different clinics have different approaches to treating hormonal imbalances. The Marion Gluck clinic and 23md in Chelsea for example favour natural progesterone and say not to touch synthetic progesterone with a barge pole!
As someone who has always had problems related to too much oestrogen (gynae/infertility) and is now menopausal, I’ve tried everything! Diet, acupuncture and herbal remedies can all help. Sugar, alcohol and caffeine for example all increase your oestrogen levels and can make PMT worse when your oestrogen levels drop. I found acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine helped me - but it is expensive and you have to keep doing to maintain hormone balance.
Remember that most women in their forties are what’s known as “oestrogen dominant” (ie too much oestrogen compared with progesterone) due to your cycles becoming less regular and not always ovulating.
Personally I would recommend either switching to natural/bio-identical progesterone, or trying other remedies including seeing a nutritionist (which is what I did).
Marion Gluck - the guru of hormone balance - as written a fab book called “it must be my hormones”. When I read to so many of the problems I’d been having made perfect sense - so would definitely recommend it! Each chapter also includes nutritional advice linked to managing the condition that is covered in that chapter (and yes there is one on PMT!).
Finally (and without being a harbinger of doom) if you can manage to balance your hormones now it will help when you do eventually hit the menopause.
Hope helpful - do pm me if you need any further advice - as I feel like I have become an amateur expert on all this stuff!
Best of luck
MARITA x

Always make your own choice and I would never give medical advice, but if it were ME I wouldn’t touch the synthetic hormones. They can cause more problems than they solve and they don’t get to the reasons why you’re estrigen dominant and solve it at a Root cause level.
Yes you may need something bioidentical in the very short term if your symptoms are so bad, but remember you’re only managing symptoms and not solving the problem. Which is all about getting your body back on balance.
There are many things you can do to do this but none of them come in a silver bullet shaped pill and require work and lifestyle stuff.
Read Sarah gottfried for starters, and maybe contact a health coach or a functional doctor for a better, more body balancing approach.

Hi Lucyhs,

I can totally relate, my hormones make me feel terrible 5 days in a month.

I gave up sugar and found that my pms went. I came on totally by surprise because normally I get the ‘signs’.

It’s not easy though, that stuff is apparently more addictive than cocaine. I cut out fruit sugar also and didn’t eat white carbs.

I too tried the progesterone only mini pill to balance me but I didn’t try it long enough. Headaches & foggy brain, I’m really sensitive to hormonal changes but diet is definitely key for me.

Hope you find what works for you, please post an update if you keep on going, would love to hear how you get on.

I’m sure nutrition plays a huge part but the mini pill sorted me out straight away. Headaches disappeared instantly. Although not having had a period for years now, I have no idea what happens as you head towards the menopause

Supplements containing DIM, along with a good functional medicine liver detox, cutting out sugar, checking your stress levels, sleep, hormone balancing foods etc.
There is so much you can do, you REALLY don’t have to live with the symptoms. Much of the imbalance will be coming from your thyroid/adrenal/hormone axis balance and a result of imbalances that build up in the body over time. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you it’s hust age and it’s your fate. It’s rubbish.

The side effects you describe are common with progesterone and may settle with time but sadly this is not guaranteed.

Lifestyle is definitely the first step but if you have already tried this then here’s a couple of links to current evidenced based guidelines. Have a read and chat to your GP.
