Debenhams in Wandsworth to close

Postby rubyonrails » Fri Apr 26, 2019 10:46 am

Not sure if its the Clapham Junction or Southside branch although my feeling is it would be the CJ one? Very sad indeed for all of the staff whichever one it is.

Ahh, that's a shame. I think it might be the Southside one because the list says Wandsworth. If it was the CJ one it would be listed as Clapham Juncton or Battersea I'd think?

I am sorry for all the staff that will loose their job but I can't say I am surprised.Apart from the cosmetics department the stock is boring and average.I had a voucher to spend so I have tried to buy some school uniform but they made it super complicated so I gave up.The other annoying thing is that we are going to have another huge store laying empty in Southside, not a good look considering that there are already a few shops that have been empty since they were built! On top of that there are retail premises in the Ram's and the development by Sainsburys...good luck filling them up!

The last time I went to Debenhams was about a year ago to buy a suitcase - and that was in the Tripp concession so it wasn't even properly Debenhams.

Can't say I'm surprised.

At the moment we have Debenhams at Clapham Junction, Southside (due to close 2020) and Wimbledon (also due to close 2020) within a very small compass.

The Wimbledon Debenhams is huge so that will have an even greater impact on the "Centre Court" shopping centre than Southside will...

It is a tragedy for all those employed - but I would love John Lewis to step in and take one of these vacated units (maybe Wimbledon is the right size).

At the moment Kingston John Lewis and Peter Jones are the nearest JL stores - both a bit of a trek - I would love them to open up more locally - and they would be guaranteed customers unlike Debenhams sadly.
