Is anyone else feeling really fed up with the state of things right now?

Postby KatherineHepburn » Wed Jun 12, 2019 11:43 am

I cannot be the only one just feeling utterly sick of the state of politics and social funding right now.

There are more and more people living in tents across London (the councils issue these instead of council housing now it seems), huge numbers of children are homeless and living in hostels, Foodbank use is through the roof, the NHS is being sold off stealthily and we have a US president telling us that it is 'under negotiation' now.

I just had a chat to a friend about our local secondary school probably having its hours cut from 4.30/5 down to 3.30pm as there just isn't the funding available for anything but the bare minimum teaching now. And how they have created a charity that arranges clothes and food parcels to children and families in need that go to this school.

And yet, the press? The government? They are just pretending everything is fine.
When quite clearly it really, really isn't. They even denied the UN's report on our hideous poverty levels and lack of social care recently.

It would seem that huge mismanagement has been taking place over the last few years and perhaps with Brexit seemingly being the only topic of conversation our eye has been off the ball as to what is socially happening around us.

It is just so utterly depressing. We are truly being divided between the few haves and the many, many who have not.

Anyone else with views on this?

I am so with you. I was very interested in Brexit to begin with but now I am dismayed with what it has led to and so underwhelmed by the potential options of leadership its not true. But still newspapers prefer to discuss BJ girlfriend and his new haircut :-(

I feel for your secondary school but there are many across London having their curriculum narrowed as well as hours cut.

What to do?

The really sad thing is that most of us probably don’t know the half of it. I for one am lucky enough to live in my BTC bubble but have a child with SEN and some of the stories of families with children with SEN/disabilities are utterly heartbreaking. There is no money and little support. Reduced funding for schools, cutting children’s centres....I worry for our children.

Absolutely agree. Schools funding: all children are precious. They are our future. State schools make up over 80% of our educational system. How many children’s lives will be blighted by these cuts? Reporting: we are constantly told more people are ‘in work’ than ever before yet see more and more homeless and begging people, even in formerly smart provincial towns. I was horrified to find the government definition of ‘in work’ is now working a minimum of one hour a week. If true it is a truly shocking manipulation of the truth.

Yes. I’ve actually been trying (and failing) to cut down on my exposure to news lately because it’s just depressing me. People normally tell me I’m extremely optimistic, but more and more I find myself tense or angry about what’s happening to the world, and to the country, and because I feel unable to influence it.

Even when something positive seems to be happening, it still falls short. I was really proud when the UK declared a climate emergency, but where’s the actual response to this emergency?

At the same time, I know like Kat said that I am very very fortunate to be insulated from so much.

I feel your frustration and despair.   I too have drastically cut down on my news feed.  It is very easy to feel overwhelmed by current affairs particularly because nowadays we are fed news on a constant stream.

So what to do?  I have no idea how much time you have to spare but rather than worrying about politics on a national level I recommend reducing your world to your neighbourhood and seeing if there is something positive you can do closer to home.  Even if it is just smiling and interacting more with those around you.  Or volunteering in some capacity - whether it be with helping with literacy in schools with an organisation such as Beanstalk or helping out at a local foodbank or community event, picking up litter or helping out with conservation in some way.   Or perhaps consider joining a choir - you may be amazed at who you meet and what activities you may end up getting involved in.
I believe there is a big Extinction Rebellion movement in South London!

I don't mean this post to sound patronising (I appreciate it probably does).  But sometimes it is just better to get on, use your energy positively and see what you can do...
